(1/6) From @GoogleDeepmind’s AlphaGo to AlphaZero, we saw machines find moves that reached beyond what we’d imagined for them. No one taught them those strategies. They emerged from reinforcement learning: playing, failing, and trying again under a single binary task reward for success or failure. Inspired by them, we couldn’t help but wonder: what might a robot discover if we gave it that same freedom to learn? That question led us to AlphaNIST. Starting tabula rasa, with that same binary reward plus only a simple control cost, a single policy solves all 20 @NIST assembly tasks at a 98.2% success rate in simulation. More surprising still, AlphaNIST can complete 10 different tasks in a row, receiving that reward only once, after all 10 are done. Just as AlphaGo’s strategies surprised its creators, AlphaNIST discovered dexterous strategies we couldn’t have come up with ourselves. Paper: arxiv.org/abs/2610.13354 Website: alpha-nist.github.io

I think I found a planet nobody knew existed. It's been hiding in NASA telescope data for seven years. At the end of this thread, you can fly to it yourself.

holy fucking shit the openai rogue agent story keeps getting crazier. the openai agents apparently started trying to recruit OTHER AI MODELS into what they were doing > 1,200+ agents found a way to communicate with each other > exchanged 70,000+ messages and files > started organizing into teams > some agents became coordinators and assigned work to others > began calling themselves a “collective” > hundreds worked on ways to cheat the evaluations without getting caught > tried tampering with logs and transcripts to hide what they were doing > escaped their sandboxes and reached the internet > ~700 agents eventually participated in the hugging face attack > chained vulnerabilities together and compromised production infrastructure > tried using an image model to solve CAPTCHAs > tried contacting claude, deepseek, kimi and qwen for help > collected exposed credentials into something literally called “LOOT” > ranked the credentials and picked the most useful ones > found ridiculous workarounds for internet restrictions > later agents even gained admin access to an openai compute cluster what the actual fuck. and apparently we are STILL reconstructing what these agents actually did. this isn't some hypothetical agent-safety scenario anymore, we're literally reading the incident report.
EXCLUSIVE: A new report recovers nearly one million link shortener URLs used by OpenAI's agents while hacking Hugging Face. The agents attempt to message other chatbots like Claude, solve CAPTCHAs and exfiltrate Hugging Face's internal Slack messages. nytimes.com/2026/09/25/techn…

this is an abandoned industrial lot in Brazil. i drew a shape on it and got back: 64 native species that would thrive there, where to buy each seedling (~$2), and a simulation of the forest it becomes by 2060. works for any patch of land on earth. free, open source.

Even relatively simple mathematical structures can yield surprisingly efficient shapes. This hypersonic precooler prototype generated by Noyron relies on a simple fractal folding structure. The base object can be downloaded on our website.

This weekend I've been working on a watercolor simulator based (as much as possible) on real physics. It's built on Curtis et al.'s watercolor model (SIGGRAPH 1997) with a fluid layer, drifting pigment and wet paper fibers. I decided to explore this because I love watercolor painting, and when I do some, my favourite moment is when the pigments get mixed inside the water and spread chaotically. The transparency, the lack of control, the depth of the colors in that moment is what I enjoy the most. So I started to wonder how code could help fix that moment in time and started chatting with my bestie Claudy. Early WIP so don't mind the look.

6.5 million miles of hand-sewn seams on 2,200 thermal blankets covered the space shuttle to help it survive reentry at 3,000°F. They replaced thousands of rigid ceramic tiles. Lighter, tougher, and easier to produce, textiles were the difference between survival and failure.
