Today won’t be the first time #yankees stars come to Iowa for a game.
Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig played in Des Moines shortly after winning the 1927 World Series.

Cheers to the late Harriette Curley, a @DrakeUniversity grad hired at Perkins Elementary in @DMschools 75 years ago this fall. Bigoted parents protested. Administration supported her. She persevered, a successful career. 1st Black FT teacher since segregated DM schools of 1870s.

A bit of an #iawx thread:
Recently @Philip_Joens put together a list of Des Moines' top 10 single-day snowfalls, 9 of which reached at least a foot.
It's possible today's storm makes that list, although I'm hoping not.

Earliest mention of Hank Aaron in the @DMRegister is June 7, 1952, when he and the Indianapolis Clowns played the Kansas City Monarchs in a Negro League game at Pioneer Memorial Stadium in Des Moines.
Baseball Hall of Famer Hank Aaron, who battled racial prejudice and hatred on his way to breaking the major leagues' career home run record, died Friday morning at the age of 86, according to two people with knowledge of his death. desmoinesregister.com/story/…

93 years ago this month: Two of @MLB's biggest stars, Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig, barnstorm through #DesMoines #Iowa less than two weeks after they led the #Yankees to the 1927 #WorldSeries.
That Yankees team is still thought of as one of the best ever.

Elvis played Veterans Memorial Auditorium 3 times, the first in 1956 when he was 21.
That crowd was a modest 4,000 — mostly teenagers, the @DMRegister reviewer wrote — but Elvis thrilled with his stage-stalking, sideburn-flicking act.

Some unforgettable memories, moments and names from Iowa's sporting past. And each came with a great @MMarturello illustration.
