The Principal Secretary for Petroleum, @harsama_kello , CBS, today joined the Principal Secretary for Correctional Services, Dr.@salomebeacco CBS, for a joint inspection of the Industrial Area Correctional Facility to assess the installation of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) infrastructure.
The assessment forms part of the Government's National LPG Growth Strategy to transition correctional facilities from biomass-based cooking to clean, efficient & sustainable LPG energy solutions.
The shift is expected to reduce pressure on Kenya's forests, improve indoor air quality by eliminating harmful smoke emissions associated with biomass fuels, enhance kitchen safety, improve efficiency in correctional institutions’ meal preparation & improve the welfare & dignity of inmates from the exposure of the harmful smoke which contributes to respiratory, eyes & skin related illnesses.
Correctional facilities currently consume approximately 64,000 tonnes of firewood annually, a practice that undermines ongoing afforestation efforts.
Following an intense assessment of the facility's kitchen, the Petroleum & Correctional Services PS agreed that the Industrial Area Correctional Facility is suitable for LPG installation. The two State Departments will now work together to build the LPG reticulation infrastructure needed to replace firewood with a cleaner, more efficient cooking system.
The PS noted that the pilot phase will start with three correctional services, emphasizing the importance of sensitization, awareness creation, safety, optimal use of LPG, & training on sustainability.
Also in attendance were officials from National Environmen Management Authority (NEMA) @NemaKenya & Directorate of Occupational Safety & Health Services (DOSHS) @DOSHS_KE

The Directorate has received a donation of the Meridian LeadCare II analyser from Afya Lafia Innovations, Kenya. This strengthens surveillance of lead exposure among the workforce, safeguarding occupational safety, health and productivity to support the country’s economic growth.
Protect yourself, your colleagues, and your community by practicing good hygiene, avoiding contact with suspected cases, and following workplace infection prevention measures. Early reporting, proper PPE use, and awareness can save lives.

Today, I joined leaders in Eldoret to mark the World Day for Safety and Health at Work, calling for safer, healthier and more supportive workplaces for all Kenyan workers.
Mental health and psychosocial wellbeing must now be a key focus in modern workplaces as remote work, economic pressures and changing environments continue to affect workers. I call for stronger workplace safety measures following the rise in occupational accidents across the country. Employers and workers must prioritize safety and timely reporting of injuries.
