Associations, (including FHCP) representing grocers, suppliers, and farmers are suggesting Loblaw's chairman Galen Weston misled the House of Commons committee on food prices in his statement on Dec. 7th. In a letter to committee chair, MP @KodyBloisNS, sent earlier today, they requested the committee disregard Weston's testimony on the grocery code of conduct. Weston claimed it would give too much power to suppliers, potentially raising prices like in Australia, but an Australian expert disputes this. #FoodPrices #Canada #Loblaw

Unraveling the Truth Behind Loblaw CEO's Australian Code Example
In a recent meeting with the standing agriculture committee, Loblaw CEO Galen Weston cited the Australian code of conduct as a justification for refusing to sign Canada’s proposed food industry code. He claimed that the Australian system favors suppliers in pricing disputes, leading to increased consumer costs, a concern he echoed for Canada.
However, experts familiar with the Australian code, challenged Weston's claims. They found his example misleading, as the Australian code does not include a price negotiation mechanism.
Chris Leptos, an Australian dispute resolution specialist, and Samantha Blake of the AFGC also refuted Weston's statements, clarifying that the Australian code does not inherently favor suppliers in price matters.
