A team I'd just met sent me a Google Sheet this week. Inside it was a malware installer dressed up as a Google update. 🚩
Screenshot below so you know exactly what it looks like.
The popup said:
"Google API update required, Restore Workspace access for this spreadsheet"
Big green button: "Get update for Windows"
Under it: "Helper.application · 2 KB" and "Signed by Google LLC · Verified publisher"
I didn't click. Closed the tab.
Then I messaged them to give them a heads up. I told them their sheet was pushing a Windows download and their account might be compromised.
They removed me from every group and conversation right away. Then they blocked me on all socials. 🫡
I hadn't handed them anything, so nothing was taken. If promising new contacts are sending you "docs" right now, here's what to watch for:
• Google never needs a helper app to open a Sheet or Doc. Ever.
• A .application file is a ClickOnce installer. At 2 KB it's just a stub that goes and downloads the real payload.
• That "Verified publisher" badge is drawn by the webpage itself. There's no real certificate check behind it.
• The error code ("oauth2_api_update_required") is made up.
• This kind of payload is usually an infostealer. It goes after your saved browser passwords, session cookies and crypto wallets.
If a spreadsheet asks you to install something, close the tab.
Grateful that my spidy senses alerted me or I would be writing a very different post. Be careful scammers are looking for every edge. The social engineering they tried on this was masterclass... 🙏

Holders of tokenized Mag 7 stocks deposited $9.57M on Aave on @base and borrowed $4.08M $USDC.
3 out of every 4 of them were new to @aave.
Mastercard also launched Agent Pay for Machines on Base with Cloudflare: AI agents pay for digital services using x402.
According to research from Coinbase and The Block, sending $200 in USDC on Base is about 86% cheaper than traditional services.
Liquidity keeps growing too: Morpho Midnight passed $100M in deposits, Spark supplied $400M USDC to the cbBTC/USDC market, and Aero launched as Aerodrome’s unified liquidity layer.
Usually a new product just moves the same users around.
Here, stocks are bringing new people into DeFi.
