Dear Cristiano,
There are footballers, there are great footballers, and then, perhaps once in a century, there is a man who makes the very word “great” feel too small to hold him.
An hour ago, I woke to your statement, and my eyes filled with tears. I had planned to be there in person at Euro 2028, to stand in the crowd and hear the anthem with you one last time. Now that dream belongs to what might have been, and I confess the sadness runs deep.
You wrote that the time had come to hand back the number seven, a shirt you never felt was yours alone. Perhaps not, but for twenty-three years, 234 matches and 146 goals, you wore it as no one ever has, and as no one ever will.
You said that when you look back you see not goals or records, but people. We see you, too: the boy who wept in Lisbon, the captain who led Europe’s champions from the touchline in Paris, the man who sang every anthem as though it were his first.
You told us that goals fade, trophies end up in museums and records are broken, but that a place in people’s hearts endures. Then rest easy, Capitão: yours is carved there forever. And you asked whether any goal of yours ever made us embrace a stranger or forget our troubles. Every one of them did, and yes, it was worth it.
You gave your life to becoming the best player in the world, and found your greatest victory in representing the best country in the world. Allow us to answer: before you, Portugal had never lifted a single major trophy; because of you, its cabinet now holds three: Euro 2016 and the Nations League in 2019 and 2025. The best country in the world was blessed with the greatest international footballer who has ever lived, and history will never give us a greater one.
The number seven will remain, as you said, but it will never truly be filled. Until we meet again, Cristiano. Obrigado.
With everlasting gratitude,
A devoted admirer, 3O
