SIR PATRICK STEWART (1940-2026)
Before everything else, Patrick was defined by being born and bred in Yorkshire, the proud county in the north of England which he loved to the end. You could hear it in his accented voice and in the stern honesty with which he told you what he thought and felt. Yorkshiremen have no truck with half-truths or avoidance of big issues. He wore his heart on his sleeve, which made him a man to rely on, to admire and in my case, love.
We first met as ambitious young actors with the Royal Shakespeare Company half a century ago but we weren’t in the same productions. My first strong memory was a few years later, meeting him in the street in central London when he told me about an offer to take over a leading part in 'Star Trek'. “But Patrick think of your stage career in the UK. Do you really want to risk—getting lost in Hollywood for years and years?”. Well, he took the risk and thank goodness for us all that he did for not just his devoted Trekkies but film and theatre audiences, who marvelled at his using international celebrity to star in a string of cinema successes ('X-Men' of course) and in great classical plays by Shakespeare, Ibsen, Arthur Miller, Peter Shaffer, Pinter and Beckett at Stratford-upon-Avon, in London’s West End and on Broadway.
America was his adopted home, where he met his adored Sunny who has cared for him through sickness and health, through thick and thin. But he never forsook his origins: and the proudest achievement of the most respected and beloved actor of his generation on either side of the Atlantic, was his appointment as Chancellor of Huddersfield University in Yorkshire.
His farewell performance in 'Avengers: Doomsday' is yet to be seen.

Rest easy, Captain. We have the helm. ✨
This is Webb’s look at Westerlund 1, a super star cluster. Because our galaxy is past its peak of star formation, and because stars live relatively short lives, only a few of these clusters exist to give us clues to that past era.

ALT Image description: A quote by Captain Jean-Luc Picard, played by Patrick Stewart. "I've come to believe that the stars have always been in my favor." - Jean-Luc Picard. The image shows a dense cluster of bright stars, each with six large and two small diffraction spikes, due to the telescope’s optics. They have a variety of sizes depending on their brightness and distance from us in the cluster, and different colors reflecting different types of star. Patches of billowing red gas can be seen in and around the cluster, lit up by the stars. Small stars in the cluster blend into a background of distant stars and galaxies on black.
Few actors have had such a presence in my life through their work and the roles they carried.
Rest well Captain.

This is everything.
Willie Rodriguez has a sister who cannot speak.
Gabby is 19. She has Rett syndrome, a rare neurological disorder that primarily affects girls. She cannot talk. She needs help with nearly everything from the moment she wakes up.
But there is one thing she does every single time, and their mother can tell you exactly what it is.
"She will look at Willie and just smile if he's in his uniform."
Saturday he wore that uniform in Norman, Oklahoma, and caught both of Kentucky's touchdowns.
Here is the whole thing.
There are eight people in that family. At home Willie helps Gabby eat. He takes her on walks. He helps her get ready for bed.
She cannot tell anybody what she is feeling. So they read her instead. A smile. A sound from the stands. That is the conversation.
She knows when the family is walking into a stadium. Sometimes you can hear her from the stands.
Their mother says Gabby has taught all of them things that cannot be taught any other way.
Now go back a generation.
Willie's father and his grandparents left Cuba and came to this country more than forty years ago.
He grew up in northern Kentucky and went to Covington Catholic. He used to speak Spanish.
"I used to be fluent when I was little. Kind of hard to keep it up."
Here is how his high school coach described him.
"He's a guy that doesn't say much but when he does something people are listening."
And here is what his coordinator at Kentucky, Will Stein, says he does with his free time.
"He's a frequent visitor to Golisano Children's at UK"
That is the children's hospital.
And here is Stein on him as a player.
"This guy is an elite player. I think he's got the ability to be one of the best tight ends in the country."
Now Saturday.
Number 15 Kentucky walked into Norman to play Oklahoma. In the first quarter Rodriguez caught a 2 yard touchdown and Kentucky led 7 to nothing.
Then Oklahoma took the lead.
With 12 minutes to go in the fourth quarter, Kenny Minchey threw him a 12 yard touchdown and Kentucky went back in front 14 to 13.
It held. Kentucky won 21 to 13.
Now the honest part. Five catches for 38 yards is not a monster afternoon, and Kentucky's defense is most of the reason that scoreboard reads the way it does. Jordan Castell took an interception 41 yards the other way late to put it away.
But Kentucky's offense reached the end zone exactly twice in Norman all day.
The same guy caught both of them.
"My family inspires me to play with that chip on your shoulder."
He has been playing for her since high school. The uniform changed.
What she does when she sees it did not.
The fact it comes out on my birthday I’m just going to have to get one of these posters purely because it lists the date as Doomsday
It’s not every day, but there are times where I realize how vastly different my perspective on things are to others around me.
Even now, I am no doubt still am unaware of how many things about me has changed in the past 5 years
I find it fascinating how it’s always “Mom”
Look, my wife deserve every single acknowledgment, it’s just funny how quickly people are to dismiss me in the equation
Ah yes, #AppleEvent day!
Where I’m reminded just how middle class I am.
I remember when this happened!!
That double VHS took up so much damn shelf space!
"A bunch of times" feels like something I would say in that scenario. lol
