OPINION: Fans won’t let this one slide 😬
I'm certainly not one to jump on the bandwagon over the BBC bosses decision to shake-up the much loved dance show. Strictly Come Dancing has been an absolute delight for British audiences for over 22 years and was certainly in need of a revamp.
But the BBC is also in the midst of a mass culling of its channels and series, across broadcast television and radio, with many popular shows being axed, among them Drag Race UK and Live at the Apollo. The Beeb has come under pressure to make significant cuts in recent years, with the broadcaster reporting that its income from the £180 annual licence fee has fallen by a quarter over the past decade.
Strictly has recently seen a dip in viewership despite being one of the channel's most popular entertainment shows, so keeping diehard fans invested is crucial for the show to continue for another two decades. Despite being one of the BBC's most watched programmes, Strictly has seen a significant drop in viewership compared to other popular shows including Celebrity Traitors, according to BARB's latest figures. In the latest ratings, Strictly was beaten by The Great British Bake Off and ITV drama The Blame. Industry insiders and fans alike have attributed the ongoing decline to several factors, including mixed reactions to the new presenting line-up and frustration over Sunday results being leaked online before broadcast.
Personally, I'm loving Emma Willis, Johannes Radebe and Josh Widdicombe as the show presenters. Willis has a natural presenting style, Radebe brings the flair while Widdicombe offers a comedic element. And in hindsight, that's the perfect recipe for ratings gold, but the complaints from viewers have not necessarily slowed. BBC viewers have continued to question Widdicombe's inclusion in the line-up, with one even brutally suggesting he "looks like a spare part" alongside his co-hosts, Willis and Radebe.
I don't entirely agree with this but bosses may need to make one key change in order to save the nation's favourite show from facing the chopping block. It just needs a simple reshuffle. I have certainly got used to the three presenter line-up, but they may have missed a trick not having Ellie Taylor as a main presenter instead.
Here's an idea - maybe have Widdicombe front the Sunday results show, while Willis and Radebe handle the live show on Saturday. Seeing as the show bosses are hellbent on having comedy on the programme, the actress and comedian has gone down a treat on Strictly's sister show It Takes Two. She has seemed to breathe new life into the show, which was previously fronted by Fleur East and Janette Manrara. Her natural wit and charm is perfect for the main show and her genuine delight at speaking with the professionals, judges, and dancers are palpable.
The corporation currently faces pressure to make savings of £500m by 2028. BBC Three, who was responsible for major hits including Fleabag, Normal People and Killing Eve, BBC Scotland and BBC Radio 4 Extra linear broadcast services will also close in spring 2027 as part of cost-cutting measures, the corporation announced in October.
I fear that with BBC taking an axe to pretty much everything the licence fee payer enjoys, it's maybe time for the execs to start listening to the public.
