King Charles is facing what historians describe as the biggest risk of his reign.
And he 'knows he'll be the last King of his kind'.
The monarch is travelling to the Bahamas and Guyana before flying to Antigua and Barbuda, all while continuing to receive cancer treatment.
Yet royal insiders say the King knows the nine-day tour will be bumpy as demands grow for a formal apology and financial reparations.
Guyana's President, Dr Mohamed Irfaan Ali, has insisted that an apology and financial compensation are essential.
"You exploited the region, you destroyed lives, you created underdevelopment," Dr Ali said ahead of the visit.
The tour follows Prince William and Princess Catherine’s Caribbean visit four years ago, which unravelled into controversy and questions over Britain's colonial past.
And sources close to Prince William confirmed he still has no intention of taking over the leadership of the Commonwealth when he eventually becomes King.
As a result, the King is aware he'll be travelling to the region as 'the last royal head of the Commonwealth'.
Historian Sir Anthony Seldon warned that the trip is putting the monarchy's moral authority on the line.
"This is the biggest risk of his reign so far, with so much just outside of his control," Sir Anthony told the BBC.
Palace aides maintain the King is a safe pair of hands who knows how to read the room and handle difficult conversations.
Insiders also stressed the King is clear that the final decision on any apologies or reparations rests entirely with the government.
Queen Camilla and the Prime Minister will join the King in Antigua and Barbuda for the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting.
