Everything is just post hoc rationalization. You can just as easily - more easily, in fact - say the childless are less likely to think kids taking school seriously is important. They don't have any. Why should they care?

"HEEL." 2025. Compelling film. Seems to be making the illiberal case for radical intervention in licentious, hedonistic, self-destructive lifestyles for the purpose of wholesome human renewal. A sloppy, abusive, selfish POS teenager is abducted by a weird family and gets Stockholm Syndromed. Described by some as a black comedy. If so, emphasis on the black!

The number of women still letting Carrie off the hook by the end of the series is astonishing. They blame Chris Hargensen for *everything*. All 200+ deaths, and massive destruction, can be pinned on her. Plus Carrie is part of a bad ass international organization of witchy X-Women! So there.

Highlighting the distorting influence of negativity bias in media and public opinion isn’t to say that there is nothing in the world to worry about. It is to say that one thing we should be very worried about is an information environment so warped by alarmism and neuroticism that we fail to form an accurate model of the actual problems, risks, and opportunities we confront.

It occurs to me that at the end of Buddy, Freddy is orphaned. That's awful! It's bad enough she's in some stranger's home which could be on another continent for all we know, but if and when she makes her way back to her hometown, her family no longer exists. In fact Freddy's existence is a total mystery to everyone else. She escaped terror only to discover a new form of it. "Who are you and where did you come from?"

Workers in six occupations do 79 tasks the government's official occupational taxonomy has yet to add. That work is worth about $140B a year in wages. That taxonomy is called O*NET, the U.S. Department of Labor's database of the tasks each occupation involves. Workers use it to help with job transitions, and economists use it to estimate which jobs AI will change. If the lists are incomplete, so are the estimates. Today we're releasing TaskNet, an open-source task catalog built on O*NET and updated for how AI is changing work. Built with researchers from Stanford, the O*NET Resource Center, and NBER. Thank you to @robinsonaisaac @erikbryn @diyi_yang @jennjwang @andreas_h0wpt @Digeconlab @stanfordnlp @stanfordhai @stanfordAIlab for contributing to this work. This is a total golden age if you're unusually insensitive to status. Like Johnny Five, you're giddy about everything you can "input," learn and enjoy. Regardless of what others are doing, you can do more than ever.

What is the @TheEconomist doing? This now feels like a clever form of subversion. Or they are so irredeemably Woke they genuinely don’t know how this comes across

My 6th grade graduation, 1991. (Not pictured.) Sierra Enterprise Elementary, Sacramento. I've been told the school's moniker sounds like some kind of computer academy. It definitely was not.

"The Lady and the Stock Exchange," 1962. Sort of a sitcom length PSA. On the one hand you can say it's sexist due to the rampant "mansplaining," but then she also runs circles around her husband with her good financial sense. He treats investment more like gambling. (Amusingly, the wise and responsible guy at the bank puts her whole $4,500 into just two companies. Not particularly wise from today's vantage point.) – at Placerville, CA

“people rate fictitious studies showing that men draw better, lie less, or are more intelligent than women as lower in quality, more harmful, and more worthy of being censored than otherwise identical studies showing that women do better than men in these domains.”
“The gamma bias has two parts. The first is the tendency to highlight sex differences that put women in a better light than men, while minimizing those that do the opposite. The second part of the gamma bias is the tendency to highlight gender gaps where women are disadvantaged and need assistance, but to minimize those where men are.”

The Michael's employee should have agreed to do this but then frame it like so:
🤖 Made with AI
This is unbelievable! Michael's refused to frame a portrait of President Trump, even after the woman explained it was for her home! I won't be shopping at Michael's anymore!

"If you stand to gain financially from the AI boom (founder, investor, etc) you need to work extra hard on your empathy..." There are far more dilletantes and casual users of AI than there are those who stand to gain financially. It's these masses vs. the small number of threatened professional artists that's the real conflict.
I’m so appalled by the hatred towards her. Yes, she’s a little over the top and millennial-cringe filming herself crying, but her struggle is real. Not everyone can just reinvent themselves overnight. If you stand to gain financially from the AI boom (founder, investor, etc) you need to work extra hard on your empathy. If you were unfortunate to be on the other side of the isle, you’d be crying too. Of course the only practical solution is to eventually adapt. But a little crashout in the meantime is perfectly acceptable.

Facts about Olan Mills photographers in the 1980s: 1. They were not genuine, trained photographers, but more akin to typical service employees in a retail environment. People skills - calming infants, corralling a family - were more important than technical skill. 2. They were overwhelmingly female. 3. They were overwhelmingly young, in their late teens and twenties. 4. They were mostly mere high school grads.

A 9-year-old in Alameda used AI to modify a talking skeleton and dubbed him "Uncle Murray." He's interactive. The AI improvised a story about how he died by falling down stairs, so now stairs are a touchy subject. Cute! @KPIXtv
