Before becoming NCI Director, my work focused on blood cancers and cell death. My lab helped lay the groundwork for progress from chemotherapy to targeted therapy. This #BloodCancerAwarenessMonth, I support @theNCI funding more basic research to deliver the next advancement.

Our myeloid sarcoma paper out today…. 🥳
Free to download until Tonight thanks to @_TanyaBondar_ We hope you enjoy reading it.
Some key highlights 👇🏼(but read the paper😉) :
1️⃣Myeloid sarcoma (MS) essentially always originates in the BM and then homes to extramedullary tissues, even when BM is morphologically “normal” 🩸🦴
2️⃣MS evolves through a “Darwinian” molecular evolution with acquisition of additional hits ⚡️ compared to medullary AML
3️⃣MS is underdiagnosed … ctDNA (cell free DNA) is very good at picking up MS, we believe it has great potential as a surveillance tool for MS 🧬
4️⃣ RAS pathway activation (with or without RASp mutations) is a cardinal feature of MS and represents a therapeutic vulnerability 🎯
5️⃣ MS adapts to the tissue microenvironment through upregulation of EMT (epithelial meaenchymal transition) programs and remodels the tissue immune micro environment
