Woke up to the sad news this morning that the iconic sycamore gap has been felled overnight. Living just 5 minutes down the road, it has been a place of solace for me on dark starry nights. It was a symbol that represented the unrivalled history and beauty of Northumberland.

At around 3am this morning there was a newly discovered 1-meter asteroid expected to hit Earth鈥檚 atmosphere over northern France! I just had to try and get a shot of it.. and here it is from Northumberland, UK 馃く @BBCLN @bbcweather @BBCJustinR @BBCNews @BBCScienceNews

The northern lights and a meteor in one shot! @kielder_obs Last night we got a brief glimpse of the aurora when a very obvious spike appeared to grow from the horizon. I set my camera up ASAP and was incredibly lucky to catch a green perseid meteor at the same time! 馃槏馃く

It's here鈥搕he deepest, sharpest infrared view of the universe to date: Webb's First Deep Field. Previewed by @POTUS on July 11, it shows galaxies once invisible to us. The full set of @NASAWebb's first full-color images & data will be revealed July 12: nasa.gov/webbfirstimages
The background of space is black. Thousands of galaxies appear all across the view. Their shapes and colors vary. Some are various shades of orange, others are white. Most stars appear blue, and are sometimes as large as more distant galaxies that appear next to them. A very bright star is just above and left of center. It has eight bright blue, long diffraction spikes. Between 4 o鈥檆lock and 6 o鈥檆lock in its spikes are several very bright galaxies. A group of three are in the middle, and two are closer to 4 o鈥檆lock. These galaxies are part of the galaxy cluster SMACS 0723, and they are warping the appearances of galaxies seen around them. Long orange arcs appear at left and right toward the center.
