Me: “I need you both to understand that I’m not going to become Emma’s full-time caregiver when you’re gone.”
Dad: “We’ve had this conversation before. You’re her brother. Family takes care of family.”
Me: “Being her brother doesn’t mean I have to give up my entire life.”
My sister Emma is 22 and has Down syndrome, along with several serious medical conditions affecting her heart, lungs, and immune system. Every winter, her breathing problems become worse, sometimes leaving our parents struggling to manage her daily needs.
My parents had Emma when they were 39. They had me a few years later, when they were already in their early forties.
Growing up, I gradually realized they expected me to become her permanent caregiver.
Mom once told me, “We brought you into this world so Emma would never be alone.”
I was thirteen when I first understood what she meant.
Emma also struggles with severe outbursts. She has hit me, grabbed my arms hard enough to leave bruises, and thrown objects when she gets frustrated. I know her disability isn't something she chose, but neither did I choose to live in constant fear of being hurt.
Whenever I complained, my parents accused me of being selfish.
They refused to discuss professional residential care because they believed nobody could love Emma as much as family.
What they never seemed to understand was that they were planning my entire adulthood without asking for my permission.
And every time I tried to remind them that I had my own dreams, they acted as though I had betrayed my sister.

Three weeks before Christmas, my wife, Emily, sent me links to two designer handbags she liked.
“Just showing you something pretty,” she texted, followed by a laughing emoji.
I knew what that meant. I had recently received a small bonus at work, so I bought one of the bags for $280. It was on clearance, and I thought I had found the perfect gift.
I felt relieved knowing her main present was already taken care of.
Then, one evening, while we were discussing Christmas plans, Emily casually said, “By the way, I changed my mind about those handbags. They're honestly ugly.”
I stared at her.
“Ugly? You sent me those links yourself.”
She shrugged. “I know. I was just browsing.”
I tried to keep my expression neutral, but she noticed something was wrong.
“You already bought one, didn't you?”
I didn't answer immediately.
Her face changed, and she spent the next several minutes explaining that she hadn't meant what she said. According to her, she was exaggerating and still wanted the bag.
But I couldn't shake the feeling that her first reaction had been the honest one.
