That was posted 9 years ago. How prophetic!
Replying to @LukeDashjr @ecurrencyhodler
Back when ASICs were first being announced, we planned to PoW change if it centralised. We should go back to that plan, and repeat as needed

The point of Bitcoin:
1. Fixed supply
2. Can be owned without third party permission
3. Can be moved without third party permission
That's it.
If it's centralized, neither of those things apply.
@saylor's "reformation" and "shedding of iatrogenic orthodoxy" is simply "Bitcoiners need to stop caring about decentralization".
That makes his vision baseless. Bitcoin without the accompanying principles has no meaning or purpose.

This completely misses the point, despite the fact that there’s zero chance this is meaningfully true, imo
If 50 million Americans own Bitcoin, it’s because 40 million of them own something with Bitcoin in it and they have no idea.
But put that aside. Bitcoin only competes with gold in its first era, as a store of value. And gold’s market cap is $28 trillion, while Bitcoin’s is a little over $1 trillion.
But you can’t transact in gold. You can’t pay for stuff easily with gold. You can’t zap your friends a little gold on Nostr. You can’t integrate gold payments with the @Breez_Tech SDK into your app in a couple of hours. Gold today only has one major use left, elemental scarcity and a history that anchors its trust.
On the other hand, I do use Bitcoin everyday. Not just for savings, but to pay 7 people I work with in 3 different countries. Some which would be annoying, others that would be literally impossible with fiat. My business account is behind a simple multisig for higher protection. My long term savings is in a larger collaborative multisig where even family members participate in the ownership. I have much of my daily spending bitcoin on a decentralized, noncustodial payment network called lightning, and some in an alternative network called Spark, and some more in a different type of trust distribution called Liquid. Each has its benefits and trade offs, but all can be used easily and quickly.
Bitcoin is a money. And not just a hard money that can be saved, but a modern money that can be used without borders, without capital controls, without permission, without credit, without days of waiting for every stupid thing to go through. I live in the future that I know we are headed toward. I am not naive and foolishly think that trust in new monetary goods will happen in a few years when historically the “fast ones” take 40+. Anyone who thinks it’s supposed to happen like iPhone adoption doesn’t understand what money is.
But I also know that fiat can’t compete, because the experience of going back to banks after living on a bitcoin standard, is like the experience of having to write a check after getting used to your debit card. It feels like being transported back in time and being forced to use a fax machine with rotary buttons. And the infrastructure and capabilities of what we can and will build in a Bitcoin system has barely shown us 1% of what is possible today.
Anyone who thinks Bitcoin is “over” or that it’s going to be “just another asset in the stock market,” have fundamentally misunderstood both what Bitcoin is, and what the critical problem of the past 100 years is that has thrown western society so horribly out of balance. We have a LONG way to go. And we will be looking at gold in the rear view mirror and still driving.

The early web was built on direct connection and personal autonomy. Somewhere along the line, it became gated, centralized, and rented.
We aren't just updating the internet; we’re rebooting it back to its original promise. No middlemen. Just pure peer-to-peer infrastructure. 🍐

* Yet Another Massive Study Says There’s No Evidence That Social Media Is Inherently Harmful To Teens
techdirt.com/2023/12/18/yet-…
Techdirt reviews the 'counter' studies to the claim that social media harm children:
"Last fall, the widely respected Pew Research Center did a massive study on kids and the internet, and found that for a majority of teens, social media was way more helpful than harmful.
This past May, the American Psychological Association (which has fallen for tech moral panics in the past, such as with video games) released a huge, incredibly detailed and nuanced report going through all of the evidence, and finding no causal link between social media and harms to teens.
Soon after that, the US Surgeon General came out with a report which was misrepresented widely in the press. Yet, the details of that report also showed that no causal link could be found between social media and harms to teens. It did still recommend that we act as if there were a link, which was weird and explains the media coverage, but the actual report highlights no causal link, while also pointing out how much benefit teens receive from social media.
A few months later, an Oxford University study came out covering nearly a million people across 72 countries, noting that it could find no evidence of social media leading to psychological harm.
The Journal of Pediatrics recently published a new study again noting that after looking through decades of research, the mental health epidemic faced among young people appears largely due to the lack of open spaces where kids can be kids without parents hovering over them. That report notes that they explored the idea that social media was a part of the problem, but could find no data to support that claim.
In November a new study came out from Oxford showing no evidence whatsoever of increased screentime having any impact on the functioning of brain development in kids.
And we can go back further too. There was a study in 2019 that couldn’t find any evidence of social media being bad for kids.
But now we have yet another study to add to the list. And it’s a big one. It comes from the National Academies of Science, entitled Social Media and Adolescent Health. Eleven different academics helped put the paper together, along with another seven staff members who worked on it. This isn’t just some random report that a couple academics put together. It was a massive project. And it shows.
But the key finding:
The committee’s review of the literature did not support the conclusion that social media causes changes in adolescent health at the population level."

Incredible stuff by team! With this primitive, devs can make social attestations like "Mathias made this Pear app" or "mafintosh on X is this user on Keet".
Much more to come on this, this is step one out of many.
Basically the beginning of a true p2p web of trust.

I'm making a memory-safe implementation of C/C++. It's called Fil-C. Currently working on making it fanatically compatible with C and C++ so that lots of programs can be made memory-safe with zero or minimal changes.
