☀️ A new 3D solar eruption model wins a NASA award! 🏆 Created by @NSF @NSO, @NASAGoddard & @USNRL, “CHAR” is a revolutionary methodology enabling a new era of reliable #spaceweather forecasting. Read the full story: nso.edu/blog/nasa-award-char…
The print version of @Nature is out with our image from the @NSF Daniel K. Inouye Solar Telescope on the front cover. The highest resolution image of the solar photosphere ever taken. @NatSolarObs @AURADC
Nice when my favorite science podcaster talks about our telescope.
Physicists have tried to figure out the mathematics of whirlpools long ago.
Now, we have finally built a telescope powerful enough to watch the same mathematics happening on the surface of the Sun.
The interesting part is that these tiny swirls may help twist magnetic-field lines, transport energy upward, contribute to solar flares, and perhaps help heat the Sun’s extraordinarily hot corona.

The Sun’s outer atmosphere is filled with waves that are hard to detect, but we’re catching them in action 🌊 Data from the @NSF Inouye Solar Telescope reveal rapid ripples in the corona that may help explain how it stays so hot and powers solar wind: bit.ly/4aTsJkN
Just six short years ago yesterday, the @NSF Daniel K. Inouye Solar Telescope made the cover of the @nytimes. Time really flies.

A great #DKIST team effort.
⚡ The @NSF Inouye Solar Telescope completed its largest single-day data transfer: 41.5TB in under 4 hours from Maui ➡️ Boulder. Check out the infographics to see the numbers in action! Congrats to our HLS, Data Center, and NSO-Inouye teams 👏Full story: nso.edu/blog/data-at-record-…
As DKIST is the ELT for solar physics, ngGONG will be the Rubin Obervatory equivalent. Congrats to the NSO ngGONG team on a job well done!
🚨 Big news! The @NSF National Solar Observatory will design ngGONG, the Next-Generation Solar Observing Network, with NSF funding! This global network would advance solar science & space-weather forecasting, replacing the long-serving GONG stations. nso.edu/press-release/nso-re…
We've recently begun a program of turning some of our best #DKIST science data into images specifically targeted for the public. The amazing result is part art form and part science. Shout out to Francisco Salinas, the SciOps team and the EPO/C team.
A new look at the Sun from the @NSF Inouye Solar Telescope! A sunspot observed in the Hydrogen line at 656.3 nm (H-alpha), used to study the solar chromosphere. In this region of the atmosphere, magnetic fields manifest as filamentary structures extending from the sunspot umbra.

Big firsts for the NSF Inouye Solar Telescope: X-class flare, sharpest H-alpha flare image, and smallest coronal loops ever imaged. These observations may help reveal coronal loop scales and improve flare modeling, aiding space weather forecasts.
