Wow. Zuckerberg has agreed to stay in California for 8 years and is reportedly preparing to pay the state's 5% billionaire tax. If confirmed, it cuts against the "billionaires will all flee" story, while other billionaires - including the Rhine Group co-chair - funds the opposition to the prop theguardian.com/news/ng-inte…
This is huge. A just-released SEC filing makes an extraordinary revelation: Mark Zuckerberg is getting ready to pay California’s 5% billionaire wealth tax and has signed an agreement to remain in California for 8 years. We are witnessing a global turning point unfold before our eyes. 🧵

Trump: We were in the midst of negotiating and a lot of stupid people said why aren’t you putting Russian sanctions— Collins: But you said you didn’t give anything for his release Trump: If I didn’t do that, you wouldn’t have him coming back. Collins: So you did give something. Trump: You don’t know anything. You’re fake news CNN. Collins: You’re saying you lifted the sanctions in exchange for his release? Trump: You don’t know what you’re talking about. You’re a low IQ person. You’re a dummy.

Police searched the offices of Marine Le Pen's far-right Patriots for Europe group at the European Parliament in Strasbourg yesterday over misuse of EU funds. The allegation is taxpayer money was funnelled to companies close to the group during the last term. PfE says that since they rebranded from the Identity & Democracy group in 2024, they are not legally liable for the actions of the group from 2019 to 2024. youtu.be/sArBNxpKN_A?is=bhh0…

"We no longer have America as an ally on climate," EU Climate Commissioner Wopke Hoekstra tells the Europa Power conference in Strasbourg. It's not every day you hear such an acknowledgement from the 🇪🇺Commission.

Trump: I got Greenland. I got it… Denmark, They've only had it from 1592. That's not that old when because President Xi from China was here, I was showing him the White House. 1792, the White House, that's when it was built, and I was showing President Xi and I was so proud of it because I fixed it, you know, it, it was like a dump. They didn't take care of it

Germany's Chancellor Merz: Social progress can be lost again if it is not actively defended. This fear is currently increasing rather than decreasing, and it is once again being ideologically charged and exploited. I didn’t actually want to say the non-word here, but it is omnipresent at the moment, and this non-word is ‘remigration.’ Behind it lies an attack on the modern Germany that we have built together over the past 65 years.

I'm at the 🇪🇺Parliament plenary in Strasbourg. On the way here I stopped in Lyon and saw the still-smouldering ruins of the 174-year-old Bellecour Pavilion burned down by rioters Saturday. I've asked MEPs for their reaction. Here's what they told me: davekeating.substack.com/p/l…

Here is the lesson Rubio is teaching 🇺🇸's allies: - we will take your nukes - we will reneg on our security guarantees - we will insult you.
“Ukraine wouldn’t exist without US aid,” - @SecRubio Or perhaps the war wouldn’t have happened at all if the US hadn’t stripped Ukraine of its nuclear arsenal.

🇺🇸🇷🇺 America will be an ally of Russia. Washington plans to establish new connections in land transport, steel, energy and investment after the war ends. The objective is to weaken the Russia–China partnership, as America's main adversary is China, not Russia. We must understand this once and for all. Europe needs its own Security Council, a European Article 5 treaty and full military independence from the US. The US is currently an ally of Russia, and the pre-2022 order will never return.

I'm in Lyon, looking at the still-smouldering ruins of the Bellecour Pavilion - a 174-year-old landmark burned down by rioters on Saturday. People are staring at it still in shock. The atmosphere is incredibly tense and unnerving. "Lyon" has been spelled out with candles.

Isn't funny how those who complain the loudest about the lack of democratic legitimacy of EU institutions are also those who hate the only directly-elected European institution? It's almost as if nationalism was their motive rather than democracy
The far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) wants to scrap the directly elected European Parliament, shrink the European Commission and let Berlin opt out of common EU policies, according to the party’s policy program. vist.ly/5p5sa

Has Merz taken a German train lately?
Germany's Chancellor Merz to investors: If we agree on delivery dates, we stick to it. If you invite friends from Germany for dinner at 7, we will arrive at 6:58. We are reliable, predictable, precise, and unsurprising. We are, in short, what investors like most. So the good thing about clichés is this: they tend to be true. So if you pick the core of this assumed Germanness, you might actually like what you get. Yes, we do have our own challenges, but Germany's DNA proves to be rather helpful in the face of a world which is harder and harder to read and to predict.

Italy's Meloni on protests & penalties: If, during a march or demonstration, you join a group of five or more people and start throwing stones, firecrackers, sticks... you risk up to five years in prison and a fine of up to €20,000. You break it, you pay for it. And if the person who breaks it is a minor, their parents pay. The parents of that kid who had fun smashing everything will have to pay. An additional 500 military personnel will arrive in Milan by the end of the year to support the police and Carabinieri. We will do everything we can to prevent what we have seen in recent days from becoming the new normal. The youngest of the youths identified in Milan was reportedly just 11 years old. 11 years old. It hurts, and it is scary. There is nothing revolutionary about causing devastation and stealing. Devastating and stealing is not a protest, it is criminality.
