Polling consistently showed a majority favoured staying in the EU or a much softer Brexit.
Boris Johnson’s “Get Brexit Done” snap election succeeded mainly because of fear of Jeremy Corbyn, not overwhelming enthusiasm for hard Brexit. He won just 43% of the vote.
That was never a clear, settled mandate for the extreme version of Brexit we ended up with.
Ten years on, with the damage clear and public opinion shifted, that 2019 result looks more like a tragic missed opportunity than a decisive national verdict.
