541,000 additional viewers. That’s what Dynamite needed on Max to catch SmackDown in the week of September 14. Dave introduces that possibility without putting the Max household count or the calculation in his tweet. You, the reader, apparently get to finish it for him.
Dynamite did 723,000 on TBS on September 16. SmackDown did 1.264 million on USA on September 18. Max would need to add an audience equivalent to roughly 75% of Dynamite’s linear audience to close that gap, measured on a comparable basis.
Max adds an estimated 20,000 to 60,000 viewers per episode of Dynamite. That range comes from enough industry conversations with people positioned to know, and I’ve already explained the reasoning in previous tweets. Listen, guys, I was an agent in Hollywood for 17 years. Those relationships didn’t disappear because my title changed. Manager, producer, founder, agent, it changes fucking nothing about who I can call or what we discuss.
And Dynamite is a simulcast. Same show, same time, on cable and Max. It isn’t exclusive to Max. Some people watching there previously watched on cable, so streaming viewership doesn’t automatically represent newly acquired fans. Another distribution outlet doesn’t establish a second audience comparable in size to the first.
Apply the estimated 20,000 to 60,000 to the 723,000 television audience, assuming comparable additional viewers, and Dynamite lands at 743,000 to 783,000. Still 481,000 to 521,000 behind SmackDown.
Give it a different assumption. Make Max 5% to 12% of the linear audience. On that particular episode, that adds approximately 36,000 to 87,000, producing a combined audience of approximately 759,000 to 810,000. Give it 20%, and it reaches approximately 868,000. Still almost 400,000 short.
Those scenarios show the scale of the audience required. Dave’s hypothetical needs 541,000 additional viewers that his tweet never accounts for.
Yes, Dave says he doesn’t think Dynamite reaches SmackDown. Then he adds that it would if Max viewers per household equaled television. Fine. His tweet still needs to identify how many Max households watched, over what period, and why that particular viewers per household assumption is justified. A weekly count of accounts that opened a stream cannot simply be added to a television broadcast’s average audience.
And that Max survey wrestling fans were passing around last week? Subscribers said it asked why they weren’t watching AEW, including whether the shows were too long or the storylines weren’t interesting. We haven’t seen the results. I’m not turning a questionnaire into a ratings report.
Dave can show the same restraint with his household hypothetical.
He’s been reporting on this business for decades. The household count, the viewing window and the conversion should already be in the explanation.
His readers were asking for an actual ranking.
They got a conditional claim and directions to the newsletter.
The missing 541,000 viewers still need accounting for.
