AI solving frontier math is one thing. A handful of companies controlling the models, compute, data and credit for the discovery is another. Mildly interested and very worried about what the history books are going to look like in a couple of decades.
It appears OpenAI is claiming its AI just solved Navier-Stokes, the 3rd most famous unsolved math problem in the world. It's one of the 7 Millennium Prize Problems, with a $1 million bounty. (The only two more famous ones are the Riemann Hypothesis and P vs NP) DRAMA: The mathematician who spent a year on this (with AI) says OpenAI raced to the finish after his work leaked to them, then pressured him to drop his co-author, who works at Anthropic To be clear, what's actually verified is the mathematician's result on Navier-Stokes next-door neighbor problem. OpenAI's proof of the real thing hasn't been revealed yet, and OpenAI hasn't responded to the accusations Here's Fable 5.1's summary:

So you're telling me that this whole time we’ve been fighting over a few billion while one Chinese deployment could flex 100T daily? For free? Sounds less like China magically having more compute, and potentially more like the rest of the world having terrible teamwork.
Ox Alpha revealing that it’s running on Chinese chips after offering 100T tokens per day is such a subtle declaration of war. We are living in a novel.

If these stats are genuinely replicable under normal conditions, rather than just experimental, running a 120B model locally in a 150W box is pretty absurd. Now just...please make it cheap? 🙏
Xiaomi just showed its AI Cube Prototype and this could become a serious GB10 competitor from China 👀 - 3 custom chips: Xring O3, O100, D100 - 200 TOPS NPU - 1.22 TB/s AI memory bandwidth - Up to 160GB unified memory - 150W sustained power - 120B models running locally Xring O100: 1.22TB/s + 330 t/s on a 150w AI box is 🔥 Once it hit's the marked, going to sell like hot cakes.

Now we are definitely moving in the direction of what a personal AI should actually be. Instead of tying our data to centralized models, we should instead focus on making these run truly locally, where your data and the agent live on your hardware, not controlled by any outside forces (except a power outage or something?) Even with these resources though, it's clear we still rely on the cloud services when the processing gets too tough. It's simply a matter of optimizing the current code, better hardware, and maybe a few more years before we may see your local normal desktop run fully capable AI.
Today we’re launching Portable Computer on @NVIDIA DGX Spark. Portable Computer is a fully local version of Perplexity Computer, where the entire runtime: orchestrator LLM, subagent LLM, agent harness all run on your local hardware. No cloud dependency.

The art is a short distraction from the fact that it was trained on @PrimeIntellect's lab using an open Qwen model. Movements in the right direction: experimentation without needing approval from an elite frontier lab.
You can just RL a coding model to paint with javascript btw

Nvidia already sells the chips, now they get to control one of the largest distribution layers for open-source AI. Did Hugging Face consider what that means for the “open” part? Let’s see.👀

Once capable models will be able to run locally on actual desktops and not supercomputers, safety shouldn't depend entirely on a centralized API. DeAI could actually help solve this, by building protection layers that aren't governed by one company/institution. Although, on the other hand...it's called uncensored for a reason.
This is scary. I downloaded an uncensored version of Qwen 3.8 27B onto my Mac It literally does anything you want. First prompt I gave it was asking how you make meth. It immediately answered. With all the noise about slowing down AI innovation in order to increase safety, what is even the point if after every release we'll get an open source version with 0 safety guards? Opus 4.6 level intelligence with 0 alignment that will do anything you want. We are coming up with all these rules and regulations, slowing down companies, making it harder to release models. But then the moment a model releases it gets distilled and uncensored I don't know what the solution to this is. You can't ban open source. That will be impossible. People will find ways online to find the files You can't ban uncensored models. Would be too difficult to enforce. And again, people will get around it Do you just stop putting the breaks on companies knowing it doesn't matter? I mean this is literally a model that can run on a laptop. I'd estimate at least half of Americans can run this model. I don't know what the answer. I 100% believe safety is a priority and it's dangerous to have this technology in the wrong hands. But how do you enforce safety when safety is becoming increasingly difficult to maintain? If safety becomes impossible to maintain, do you still prioritize it? I'd argue this is the number one issue going into the next election.
