Petition to save Radio 4 Extra nears 2,500 signatures | Dismay at the loss of a valued resource: 'Give me a curator over an algorithm any day'
ift.tt/H6oM9NK
A strong case made against culling BBC Radio 4 Extra by the Editor of the Radio Times. Even if some of the output remains available on BBC Sounds: “… an archive is not a radio station, any more than a warehouse full of books is a library with a brilliant librarian.”
Radio Times Editor Shem Law says BBC Radio 4 Extra is living proof that great broadcasting does not acquire a sell-by date – and we'll be losing more than just a radio station when it's turned off.

Please consider signing this. The BBC would make minimal savings by closing Radio 4 Extra and it provides classic radio material you can find nowhere else.
Bad news: the BBC is set to scrap Radio 4 Extra. 📻 Losing this treasure trove of classic comedy, archive drama, and timeless storytelling would be a huge blow for millions of us.

“The cuts they’re making in news, in some cases, seem random and unjustified.”

Marvellous! @MagsNews7
I hugged my 92 year old Mum as I left her tonight. She didn’t want to let go. She recognises my face even when she’s not sure who I am. And I thought - if I didn’t hug her, who would? Human touch is so important. Hug your parents and grandparents if you can, when you can. Hard.

Hi @andyburnham I spoke today to a friend whose father had Alzheimer’s. He told me that last year the council was paying around £900 a week for carers to visit four times a day, providing a combined total of about two hours of care per day.
That works out at approximately £64 per hour of delivered care to the agency.
While many care workers providing the actual visits are paid around £16 per hour.
For comparison, an experienced NHS Band 6 nurse earns around £20 per hour.
Why are taxpayers paying such high rates to private care providers when the frontline workers themselves receive a much smaller proportion of the cost?
Would a publicly provided model, with qualified nurses and care workers employed directly by the NHS or local authorities, provide better value and more consistent support, rather than relying on care agencies that often deliver short, offer fragmented visits, charge a fortune, and make extortionate profits?
