So coming back to the mall bit - If you think of the stock market as a huge mall, and everything sold there as stocks - then the actual billing and exchange counters where you make the final purchase would be the stock exchanges!

The stock exchange, on the other hand, refers to the actual organisations that facilitate the trade. Examples: National Stock Exchange (NSE), Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE), New York Stock Exchange (NYSE), etc. (Yes yes, we’re getting to the mall bit!)
