Indian Railways has seen one of the largest infrastructure upgrades in its history since 2014. Electrification rose from 21000 route kms (2014) to 70000 route kms by march 2026. 31000+ kms of new tracks added, track renewal of around 50,000 kms. High speed capable track doubled to 80% of network. Vande Bharat (nearly 100% occupancy) hv 160+ chair car operational, Amrit Bharat Station scheme covers approx 1300 station (for upgrade). Consequential accidents fell sharply , average of 171/year (2004–14) to 31 in 2024–25 and 10–14 in 2025–26 (till late 2025/early 2026). Overall Mail/Express punctuality improved to 77–80% in recent years (from lower levels like 69–73% earlier in the period). It is not transformed, and congestion, fog, maintenance blocks, and external factors still cause delays. Vande Bharat performs better.
