WHAT THE FUCK IS HIS PROBLEM

James smirks at Laura after she confronts him for killing Mary.

Maria ate again
Maria doesn't get soaked by the rain, only James does.
A subtle but genius hint that something is wrong with her and she isn't what she seems.
(Notice how James gets soaked gradually)

I see the vision, Bloober. 😎
JAMES YOU'LL SUFFER ETERNALLY FOR WHAT YOU DID
If you watch the videotape with all sounds disabled except voiceover, you'll hear Mary struggling to speak and breathe as James kills her. At some point it sounds like she's asking "Why?".
You can also hear her whisper James' name just before he puts the pillow on her face.

Why don't more people talk about the novel?
The official SH2 novel confirms it was the Brookhaven director who left the map with a note for James, to lead him to the letter and wrench he also left for him in this scene.
Therefore, it's him on the phone. James looks disturbed before hanging up, possibly either because the director said something to help him remember, or because James recognized his voice, or both.
James' thoughts on the director's letter, from the novel:
"The spot indicated on the
director’s map...was a surprisingly ordinary-looking house. As the
map promised, a letter sat on the stairs in front of the entrance."
"That letter was clearly addressed to me. Could it be a message from a psychiatrist? Maybe the whispers of a doctor trying to cure a deranged patient appeared in the form of that l letter. The patient records in the office, the diary pages scattered on the roof, if they really are related to me, what if they were the doctor's attempts to
guide me?"
