Reading is one of the best things you can do and costs like $20 for six hours, tops. In many cases it's free. The people who make it possible live in penury and the whole modern economy is organized against it.

My third fiction acquisition ever is the recovered novel “Pat the Lion on the Head” by Raymond DeCapite—compared by Salvatore Scibona to Bellow and Twain. If funny, street-smart dialogue in a midcentury Cleveland setting is your thing, hit me up re: review copies, features, etc.

“Actually, in America, the reading of books is up. Sales of print books have increased nearly twenty-five per cent from a decade ago. The number of independent bookstores in the United States has climbed steeply since 2009, with a seventy-per-cent increase since 2020.” These nuggets & more in this delightful @NewYorker profile of James Daunt, founder of Daunt Books, CEO of Barnes & Noble, and Managing Director of Waterstones: newyorker.com/magazine/2026/…

Imo, newspapers and magazines were the far more important vehicles of casual literacy. Daily habit for a ton of people to read real articles, essays, etc. Books still exist and will endure far beyond our lifetimes; newspapers and magazines are actually gonna die.
The biggest reason for the decline of reading imo, is that it doesn't have a "three movies a year" crowd anymore. Regular, not very intellectual people reading a couple of airport paperbacks every year was a huge market in the 20th century, but those people are all on tiktok now

A funny thing about the mass market paperback discourse is in my childhood they were about $6.99 or roughly $16 in 2026 dollars... which is about what trade paperbacks are priced today. The cost of a paperback book hasn't really changed (although hardcovers are extra pricey now)

Have these idiots forgotten libraries exist
Everyone blames screens for the decline of reading. Nobody blames the consolidated corporate publishing industry that made books pricier, more generic, and harder to find. jacobin.com/2026/10/books-pu…

That's ridiculous. Totally false premise. I just finished a novel from 1980 with a stated price of $19.95. Hardcover novels would be $60 today if prices kept up with inflation.

we focus too much on third spaces and not enough on things like bells, public transit, and parks that create a shared urban experience
One of our local churches decided to start ringing the bells again this year, and it absolutely slaps. Those medieval folks were on to something using bells to keep track of time.

Three years ago Hamas terrorists launched a premeditated slaughter of innocent Israeli citizens, unleashing an explosion of violent antisemitism worldwide. As we remember the victims of 10/7, we must all recommit to confronting anti-Jewish hate wherever it appears.
