Just received a rejection. Reading the reviews, I feel super privileged that 3 evidently smart economists deeply engaged with the paper, said some nice things, and gave really constructive criticism. It's made me so much more excited to re-engage with the project and go again!
Submitted my first paper to a top 5 journal. Whatever happens, I’m mostly just excited that my Professor thinks my masters thesis is good enough for a top journal!

the future of academic papers!
Thrilled that #paper2agent is published in @nature today! Scientific knowledge is traditionally stored in passive papers. Paper2Agent transforms papers into virtual authors that answer questions, apply its methods and collaborate w/ other paper agents to make new discoveries 🧵

It is too hard for kids to get into college. And it's too hard for schools to tell students apart. The problem is twofold: (1) grade inflation at the high school level combined with overly mechanical assessment; (2) a failure to expand slots at competitive/elite institutions.

For what it is worth, I am generally in favor using standardized tests like the SAT for college admissions - we should have universal testing. I also think predictive validity and college performance alone are not what an universities ought to value or optimize.

This is a an informative and accessible read on the use of the SAT in college admissions in California. There are three things that I think are worth highlighting:

I'm excited to share a new resource. The CPIM dashboard provides an interactive overview of Canadian population, immigration, labour market, and housing market trends based on publicly available data: justinwiltshire.com/cpim #canada #immigration

The purpose of the dashboard is to make key trends easier to access, compare, and interpret. By presenting these data in one place, the dashboard supports discussions on the relationships between immigration, labour market dynamics, and housing market conditions in Canada

Excited to see this finally coming out in the October issue! It was a lot of fun working on this with @_CarlMcPherson, @dsosinskiy, and @Michael96718027. The upshot: Large min wage increases through $15 led to substantial pay growth and no disemployment

This is important work showing how statewide abortion restrictions affect the geography and composition of the physician labor market.
In June 2022, the Dobbs v. Jackson Supreme Court decision overturned Roe v. Wade, sending abortion regulation back to states. Within months, bans were enforced in some states while others expanded protections. I study how these bans affected the practice locations of OBGYNs. 🧵

As university budgets come under strain, policymakers have often turned to nonresident tuition as a lever to raise revenue. My new paper uses a lottery to show that for every $1 by which nonres tuition rose, uni profit rose $0.08, and the PDV of state tax revenue FELL by $2.53.
