Hangzhou is what happens when ancient Chinese gardens meet Alibaba-era tech. Iโ€™ve been coming since the late 90โ€™s! Fun fact: It was worldโ€™s most populated city around the time when Marco Polo visited. Inviting all to read along as I โ€œrediscoverโ€ the Dragon!
โ€œ[Hangzhou] is without doubt the finest and most splendid city in the worldโ€ โ€” Marco Polo I'm just as impressed in the 21st century as Polo was in the 13th. What a remarkable city! So green, so walkable, so beautiful.

๐Ÿ‡ฎ๐Ÿ‡ณ: Indian bro calling out Chinese expansionism How do I explain this to him? Awkward ๐Ÿ˜ฌ๐Ÿคญ
A hypocritical Chinese student whose education is funded by Australian taxpayers is protesting against the Australian government. When a reporter asks him why he doesn't protest against the Chinese Communist government, he doesn't have the guts to answer. He complains about democracy in Australia while enjoying the freedom to protest that it provides.

In my view, this substantial state visit should accomplish two things at once for both countries. First, lock in a solution to the trade war that both sides need, so that the November expiration of the trade truce does not shock global supply chains. Second, the two countries should put in place measurable steps for people-to-people exchanges: more direct flights; visa processing that no longer treats every undergraduate in a STEM field as a high-priority screening target; study visits measured in months rather than days; and a genuine commitment that what is truly valuable is long-term study and on-the-ground research, not week-long sightseeing tours. The United States in particular should respond by stopping the politicization of ordinary people-to-people exchanges. There should be no more Chinese scientists stopped at the boarding gate, laboratories emptied, graduate students treated as suspects merely for collecting cultural samples, visas revoked because of a chosen field of study, or joint research institutions shut down without causeโ€”as if a classroom itself were a front line of confrontation. China has always attached great importance to Chinaโ€“U.S. people-to-people exchanges. At the November 2023 APEC meeting in San Francisco, President Xi told an American business audience that the hope of Chinaโ€“U.S. relations โ€œrests with the people of the two countriesโ€ and announced an invitation for 50,000 American young people to visit China over five years. By May 2026, the Chinese side stated that this target had already been met two and a half years ahead of schedule. That same month, in a reply to students from both countries who took part in the โ€œSailing the Blue Together: Chinaโ€“U.S. Youth Friendship Journey,โ€ Xi reiterated the point: the story of Chinaโ€“U.S. friendship is written by the people; the future of Chinaโ€“U.S. relations is created by the young. People-to-people exchanges cannot, of course, resolve the Taiwan question or settle the details of rare-earth trade. But they can accomplish something a four-hour meeting cannot: they leave behind a collective memory that outlasts the term of any tariff agreement. When military-to-military dialogue stalls and investment screening tightens, people-to-people channels can still operate. Flight frequencies, visa wait times, whether a 22-year-old can spend a semester abroadโ€”these things may look trivial. Yet an American student who has studied in Beijing or Shanghai will find it harder to accept a wholesale demonization of the other country. At the very least, the cost of keeping the โ€œChina threatโ€ narrative alive becomes higher. Chinaโ€™s 240-hour visa-free transit policy, which includes eligible U.S. citizens among dozens of countries, looks small but can have long-term effects. (๐Ÿงต2/3)

Iโ€™m not a visitor. Iโ€™ve lived in Shanghai for 25+ years as a Detroiter in exile. I finally got the chance to meet Medea @medeabenjamin and invite her to my new home! What youโ€™re seeing in this video is my everyday neighborhood โ€” not a staged tour. This is what happens when a city takes public resources and actually applies them to people: clean air, green space, transit, housing, and health centers within walking distance. Detroit in 1999 (and a lot of American cities still) showed me the opposite. China isnโ€™t the enemy. We have more to learn from each other than most people want to admit. If your city is still decaying, ask why this kind of development is possible here and not there.
What does it look like when cities invest in people? In Shanghai, a once-polluted neighborhood has been transformed into a community filled with green spaces, housing, public transportation, and accessible services. From restored waterways and nature reserves to high-speed rail and neighborhood health centers, this community offers a glimpse of what people-centered urban development can look like. โ€œThis is what development looks like. This is when you take your resources and you apply it to the people.โ€ China is not our enemy. We have a lot to learn from each other.

John Brown was an ultra. He was not about โ€œletโ€™s elect a decent government to help the Blacks, letโ€™s gradually abolish slavery, donโ€™t wanna piss the South offโ€. His line was โ€œSlavery is a mortal sin, and it must go, immediately. If it requires oceans of blood, so be it. I will defend this position with my body, as I am about the Lordโ€™s work.โ€

Waitโ‰๏ธ What does a scholar from Myanmar have to do with the United States? Wait, wait, these dumb asses at The State Department just exposed and implicated themselves in foreign meddling and espionage in Burma (Myanmar) ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿคฃ๐Ÿ˜‚ Operation Paper 2.0
The State Department just warned Americans: travel to China and you risk wrongful detention. On October 16 it added a โ€œDโ€ indicator to Chinaโ€™s Level 2 advisory. The overall rating stays the same, but the message is now direct. Americans face a serious risk of being detained by the Chinese government. Two cases drove it. Youlin Chen, a Boston seismologist, was arrested at a Beijing airport in late 2024, charged with espionage, interrogated over 100 times, and held without trial over research the State Department had funded. Min Zin, a Myanmar scholar, was detained this June at a Chinese airport despite a valid visa and held in isolation. Both have been formally designated wrongfully detained. China says the claims are baseless. Bipartisan senators pushed for the warning weeks ago. The bottom line is clear: the U.S. government is telling you this risk is real.
