The GAVO Newport Volunteer Awards never fails to lift the soul. 💛 Congratulations to every nominee and winner. You give your time to support others, and you're a credit to our city. Huge thanks to GAVO's brilliant chairman, Edward Watts MBE DL, and all the GAVO team.
The right decision. It is the right thing to do for Newport, but also Wales and it's economy.

Zelenskyy: "When our strikes reached Yandex data centers, it suddenly became little easier to breathe on many social media platforms. Many people noticed it.
There was less hate, less division, fewer provocations because there were fewer bots. It's pretty clear where those bots were coming from.
If they disappeared when Yandex went offline, this proves once again that Europe is not the source of the problems."
The big problem is that Russia figured out how modern society consumes information a decade ago, but the West hasn't.
There are millions of bots commenting and posting Russian propaganda. There are paid influencers spreading it, with Russian bots supporting their content.
There is a gigantic machine operating to radicalize and influence Western societies, and there is not enough defense in place.
It doesn't just influence elections, it sows discord, engulfs societies in culture wars, radicalizes teenagers, and shapes political decisions when elected officials fail to read the room.
That needs to change. And fast.

Welsh politicians love to talk about the Basque Country.
So worth pointing out that since 1999 the Basques have added 4x as much high-capacity road as Wales despite having a million fewer people (151km v 37km)
Basque projects incl a 46km mountain motorway with 13km of tunnels

From Bangkok, IMF World Economic Outlook released…
- Upgrades UK growth this year by 0.3% to 1.3%, joint second highest in G7, defying the idea the UK would be hardest hit by Iran war… but inflation higher and growth trimmed next year
- UK “stands out” on deficit reduction, IMF Chief economist tells me, as its figures show a 3.9% point fall in deficit from 2025-2031, significantly more than other G7 nations, with 3 of them actually increasing their deficits over this time.
- IMF says UK should “stay course” on fiscal plans, Chancellor arrives tomorrow
- overall story of resilience in world economy, despite the clouds from the Gulf, as AI boosts US, Asia and UK to some degree… energy and trade proving flexible in dealing with shocks

Traffic chaos for residents, and the report admits worse air quality and noise. I'm totally opposed.

A £1.9m investment at Fourteen Locks is complete. The pond, slipway and surrounding area have been refurbished, a new island built, the dragonfly's wings recast, and lock gates, sluice gates and canal lining renewed. We hope the community enjoy it.
Always a joy to open Newport food festival and be a judge on our teens chef challenge. There are 75 stalls, live music and entertainment for children of all ages. Pop down and have a look.
What a joy to march through Newport city centre with children and families from across Gwent, celebrating next year's Eisteddfod yr Urdd Bro'r Wenynen, Gwent 2027! Kind weather for the speeches — and even better for the music. Huge thanks to the organisers and volunteers
Sport with no barriers. Visited Morrello Marvels' Para-Try-Athlon in Newport, a fundraiser for people with physical and neurological conditions like stroke, MS or brain injury. Humbling to hear their stories. Know someone who'd be interested for 2027, get in touch with Morrello
Two years ago I told a business conference that Newport would be Wales' economic engine room again. They laughed. I said they wouldn't be laughing for long.
This is just the start. More big announcements coming for Newport: more local jobs and better wages
