Today, we had the honor of welcoming #Nigeria’s Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Waidi Shaibu, to the Museum for the Campaign Against Genocide. Reflecting on the exhibits, he commended the former RPA forces, and the remarkable resilience of the 600 soldiers during #Rwanda's liberation and the historic effort that stopped the Genocide against the Tutsi.

From cultural tourism to conservation and new technologies, Day 5 of #TheMuseumsLab2026 broadened the conversation beyond museums and memorials to explore the intersections of heritage, tourism, environmental stewardship, research, and technology. In @MusanzeDistrict, TheMuseumsLab fellows experienced cultural tourism at Red Rocks Rwanda, before engaging with conservation and research at the Ellen DeGeneres Campus of the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund. The day also provided an opportunity for fellows to interact with @gahundemaurice, Governor of @RwandaNorth, who was also one of the speakers in Module 1 of #TheMuseumsLab2026 programme. The 4th day’s journey took #TheMuseumsLab2026 fellows to Ntarama Genocide Memorial for a guided encounter and reflection on remembrance and the preservation of memory. The conversation continued at L’Espace #Rwanda, where fellows explored the question of memory and resilience, followed by a panel discussion on how artists, institutions and communities work together. What stories existed before and after colonial rule in Rwanda? Day 3 of #TheMuseumsLab2026 took fellows into Rwanda’s pre-colonial and post-colonial histories through the Ethnographic Museum and King’s Palace Museum exploring material culture, archaeology, traditional practices, royal heritage and the histories that shaped Rwandan society. These encounters invite a broader understanding of what it means to represent a society’s past: whose histories are collected, how they are interpreted, and how museums can help audiences encounter histories beyond colonial frameworks. By engaging with Rwanda’s heritage across different periods, the fellows continue to examine how museums can connect memory, identity and the possibilities of the future. #BuildingFuturesFromMemory #Rwanda

Day 2 of Module 3 takes #TheMuseumsLab2026 fellows into a profound engagement with Rwanda’s history of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi. Visits to the Kigali Genocide Memorial at Gisozi and Campaign Against Genocide Museum created space for learning, remembrance and reflection on the responsibilities of institutions that preserve difficult histories. The day asks us to consider how museums and memorial sites can help societies remember, educate future generations and work toward a future in which genocide ideology and any kind of violence are confronted and prevented.
