Any LDS members that use the phrase "you can leave the church, but you can't leave it alone"... Please realize you are using the same playbook that JWs use to try to discount former members that become critics.
JWs use phrases like “mentally diseased” or “they just can’t let it go” to discredit ex-members. The message is always the same: if you speak out, you’re the problem.

Here's the source of our topic today.
That’s a stretch. The financial stuff was a grey area that they were unjustly targeting due to political bias that was proven to exist in all other government agencies. They should have just got a warning first.

Mormons accusing others of "philosophies of men mingled with scripture” is so funny to me. Like even from a tbm view, what was BY's Adam-God teachings? And the only way to not view all LDS teachings that way is to accept all their truth claims. It only works under circular logic.
Yeah, actually trying to do what God wants us to do sucks. 🤦‍♂️ What you got man - maybe I’ll do what you think is “real Christianity”? Let me guess, a little “philosophies of men mingled with scripture”. 🤮 There are what, thousands upon thousands of different Christian views on many issues; what it takes to be saved, or even what the make-up of the trinity actually is - so… honestly, I’d love to know how all of what what you got is actually correct? Shoot, if you could even help me out with knowing which of the hundred different versions of just English Bibles I should start with - and then should I get the one with 66 books, or is it the 74, 76, 77, or 81 books? I wouldn’t want to read one that’s “adding to” or “taking away” (or has butchered translations) of Gods word.

Darn. This post got me blocked. I was kind of worried about that. I don't always agree with @BlackBlessedLDS but generally have a lot of respect for his approach and civility.
This story has aspects that can be heartwarming, but I worry about how these moments get extrapolated, and the risk of using them to influence and even manipulate people. 🧵 1/x

If a leader uses these statistically probable events to convince others it is not a coincidence, in order to get them to not question their faith, and continue feeling required to do things like pay tithing, that smells like manipulation. 8/x

Imagine if every time Tony Robbins runs into someone considering his seminars and is currently struggling, he tells them the meeting is no coincidence and a sign they should buy his lifetime coaching package. Would that be manipulative? The dynamic has similarities. 9/end

I recall seeing a few Mormon conversion stories like this as well. Most all religions tend to think they have the best and truest converts, and it's only sin or bias that keep people from converting.

I was once a consumer of anti-Catholic content. Then I began noticing the mean-spiritedness of it all. And the Catholics in the comments would defend their faith. “Why would these pagan idolators resist correction?” I thought to myself. So I investigated Catholicism to better understand it and why anyone believes it. Within two years I was confirmed Catholic.

My mom is broken-hearted and feels like an absolute failure because all of her adult kids are in varying stages of their own faith crisis. Her pain has been the hardest part of my own journey. Nevermind the fact that we are all very successful, well-adjusted, god-fearing, productive members of society with good careers, thriving families of our own, and strong extended family ties. It's hard to not feel some bitterness toward the organization that indoctrinated her into believing my siblings and I are somehow 'less than' (and so is she) simply because we no longer believe all of its truth claims.

C.S. Lewis set up a false trichotomy. There are other options, not the least of which is that much of what is attributed to Jesus is just legend or misreporting. C.S. Lewis was not trained as a philosopher, theologian, or biblical scholar. ehrmanblog.org/liar-lunatic-…

“I am trying here to prevent anyone saying the really foolish thing that people often say about Him [that is, Christ]: ‘I’m ready to accept Jesus as a great moral teacher, but I don’t accept His claim to be God.’ That is the one thing we must not say. A man who was merely a man and said the sort of things Jesus said would not be a great moral teacher. He would either be a lunatic–on a level with the man who says he is a poached egg–or else he would be the Devil of Hell. You must make your choice. Either this man was, and is, the Son of God: or else a madman or something worse…. You can shut Him up for a fool, you can spit at Him and kill Him as a demon; or you can fall at His feet and call Him Lord and God. But let us not come up with any patronising nonsense about His being a great human teacher. He has not left that open to us. He did not intend to.” –C.S. Lewis in Mere Christianity

This hits hard. Articulating it better than I could. When I’m honest with myself & research the history as it is documented by scholarship, read the Bible for what the words likely originally intended, without a church leader telling me what to believe, this is the take.
