So proud of @DoaneBio Alum @RachelLukowicz for being a co-author on a paper in @CommsBio (@NaturePortfolio) looking at eyes in zebrafish!
(Yes…looking at eyes is very meta)

Talk about #ClimateChange with your family & friends!
Ask politicians their stance on #ClimateChange!
Make it a priority when you VOTE!
If you can walk somewhere, do it rather than drive!
YOU can be the agents of change for YOUR future! (especially with @DoaneBio)

BIO345 students designed 2 🌲🌳 plantings on campus! While this was great for fighting #ClimateChange & the 🌲🌳 plantings have reduced Doane’s carbon footprint, its really expensive & less visible to the Doane community.
So we shifted to a student-designed pollinator garden!

My students design a garden each year! The garden is a great way for students to express their creativity.
The Doane community can 👀 the gardens walking around campus & learn about the challenge & the student driven solution!
We’re planting this year’s garden in early May!

Each year that I have done this, the students seem to 💚 this project.
They can see their ideas become a tangible reality & they know that their fingerprint will be at Doane forever!

Global problems, like pollinator loss & #ClimateChange, can seem too big to fix. I wanted my students to address this problem at the local scale while also educating the larger Doane community!
The Doane Biology program allows students to make REAL progress on REAL challenges!

Students in BIO345 – Conservation Biology designed EVERY aspect of the pollinator garden from the plants that are included to exactly where they are going to be planted! This is service learning!
We have included plants like milkweed & goldenrod which are great for pollinators!

1 out of every 3 bites of food we eat is supported by pollinators like 🐝 & 🦋, but they are under threat from pesticides, #ClimateChange, & habitat loss. A pollinator garden provides a space for these important animals to thrive!
When pollinators thrive we thrive!

We've found some REALLY COOL results.
Depending on how hot you burn the biochar it changes the properties of the biochar & how microbes in the soil behave when you add it to soil & how well it fights #ClimateChange.
Biochar can sometimes make invasive species more invasive!😱
