Two full days have passed without a further public situation update on Ebola from Kenya’s Ministry of Health.
The last update was issued by DG Health Dr Patrick Amoth on Monday, 26 October. It brought welcome news: 20 contacts had completed their 21-day monitoring and returned home in good health. Nine confirmed cases in a single cluster, two deaths, seven patients stable in treatment, all 135 contacts traced 💯 and 98 contacts still under monitoring.
The Kenya NPHI dashboard on its website shows 548 people tested, but the dates and testing activity displayed leave it unclear how current the information is. Have further tests been done? Have all additional results been negative? How are the seven patients progressing?
The silence from MOH is making me feel somewhat queasy and uneasy. I suspect many in the public, media and health community are wondering likewise.
Perhaps there are no new confirmed cases and all the patients remain stable. That would be very good news. But on the other hand, the silence does leave some of us wondering whether something concerning is being investigated or awaiting confirmation before an announcement. God forbid!
Of course, silence is not evidence that something is wrong, but MOH must please update us daily!
An information gap leaves room for anxiety, speculation and rumours. That is not healthy during an outbreak, when public trust and confidence in the authorities are so important.
Uganda and Nigeria have been publishing updates on contact monitoring and response activities.
We in Kenya need a predictable daily public bulletin too, even when the figures remain unchanged. If something remains uncertain, MOH should acknowledge it.
It need not be lengthy: tests done and results, any new confirmed cases, patients’ progress, and contacts still under monitoring.
“No new confirmed cases” is still news. It should be stated in a dated daily public situation report, rather than left to be inferred from silence.
MOH @MOH_Kenya, DG @DrPatrickAmoth, Hon. CS @HonAdenDuale … please keep us updated daily.

More than 10,000 people been infected and reported with #Ebola in the #DRC, and, sadly, close to half have died. In some families, more than one life has been lost. The devastation is immense.
It remains clear that the government-led and partner supported response must continue to scale up and out across all affected areas as well as those at risk.
But there are encouraging signs of progress:
-Close to 2700 people have recovered so far and over 1000 are currently receiving clinical care;
-Science, collaboration and communities are offering new vaccine and treatment candidates to prevent and treat Ebola caused by the Bundibugyo virus. @WHO is working with partners on several clinical trials currently underway;
-Capacity to provide optimised clinical care to Ebola patients by protected health workers has expanded to over 2100 beds across 109 Ebola transit and treatment centres;
-Engagement of private health service providers, traditional healers and community leaders into the response is opening up new opportunities to detect patients early;
-With the outbreak spreading to hard to reach and conflict affected areas, we are expanding our operations through rapid response teams who can reach communities where they are.
These efforts and progress give us more than hope, the outbreak can and will be brought under control and ended. We call for continued global solidarity and support to sustain the response. We will not let up.
It’s ok to be skeptical of the government but it won’t change the facts about this outbreak.
Over 10,000 people have been infected by #ebolavirus in the DRC and 50% of them have died
Dear government and health organizations. The people have lost trust in you. While the information you relay maybe factual and evidence based the people are not hearing it. Advocacy and Communications has evolved. Stay guided!
My bucket list of Kenyan producers I want to work with is @HeyHeyBlinky and @HouseOfDillie no way my album is not having them on it. I have others but those are my Top 2 because of their ears.
Please stop taking anti-malarial drugs, antibiotics, anti-fungal and anti parasitic medications over the counter without confirming diagnosis. The microbes are evolving and evading drug mechanisms. AMR will be the new pandemic and big pharma isn’t spending billions on poor people
I’m realizing I might not be the best role model for the “cliche” medical specialist. If you’re looking for a mentor who thinks beyond the professional career I maybe of help.
You see what happens when you report on things you didn’t train or study. Artesunate-pyronaridine (ASPY) is an oral fixed-dose artemisinin-based combination therapy (ACT) recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO) for treating uncomplicated Plasmodium falciparum & Vivax.

As a doctor, I’m acutely aware of my potential bias, but I think the public should approach claims of medical negligence by families in the media with much more scrutiny. Especially after deaths. Healthcare isn’t perfect, but the full story is OFTEN not shared.
That’s highest attainable quality of healthcare. Some parents want to make sure when they have a sick child they’re seen by a Paediatrician or specialist. It’s called being on “Call” this career hakuna short cut but don’t make it your only source of revenue or you’ll die young.

Good to see some of the reactions to Serbia and Brazil: that it takes dedicated organising to win an election. What will it take to change a system? To fix an economy? To challenge a deeply unfair global (dis)order? To renew a social commitment to the values Kenyans agreed represent them? Just as important, who will it take beyond politicians for this to happen? Kenya is in an argument between its past and its future - how it goes depends on who shows up to argue.
