A synthesis is possible
My wife doesn't understand that while every girl wanted to be a Disney princess at some point, every boy wanted to be a fighter pilot. Ace Combat is the equivalence of the "ultimate Disney princess simulator" for men in that regards. Though I think all women should play it too.

Didn’t roll out of bed expecting to see NS solved today but not shocked either. Feel bad for Levant and Tristan. But it’s not like you can call shotgun on a millennium problem. Think openAI and Seb played it mostly straight but not exactly gently.

That of course is supposing that openAI didn’t seed the search with Levant and Tristan’s private chats which would be reprehensible. I can’t know, but I don’t think they did.

how rationalists look at you when you tell them they’d convince more people of AI risk if they had kids and acted normal instead of simulated rape orgies

I wonder if that is how I'll feel when I'm dying. I wonder if I'll cry, not understanding why everything that was so beautiful, and now seems like it happened so fast, has to end.

“You’ll get to brush your teeth tomorrow” I explain to her “and the day after that” but I’m suddenly conscious that days are not without end, and I realize that I also don’t understand why she doesn’t get to play with the water in the sink forever

The boring billion was actually a period of mad nanotechnological development
It just seems implausible this is what we are made of, essentially, nanotechnology about a billion years beyond anything we can design or make ourselves.

Found the Scott Alexander Scott Adams post deeply upsetting. It starts with some extremely incisive, perceptive reflections. This is usually out of bounds, but fair when it comes from a place of care and love. Mid way through the post, it become clear this was not the case.

To understand someone so very deeply, and yet to write about them with aversion after they have passed? It is hard to me to imagine doing such a thing. Only, perhaps I can see it, if one is psychologically invested beyond the extent that is appropriate.

When the flaws and virtues of the deceased make one too keenly aware of one's own failures and shortcoming perhaps some cannot help but fail to respect the conventions regarding how one should discuss the recently dead.
