Monitor the latest on the weather over the next several hours. There is a very low chance of a weak tornado developing with any showers and thunderstorms across southern and central #LACounty. Be weather aware. If winds increase suddenly, go indoors. #CAwx #LARain

Riots spread from public areas (downtown, public buildings) and looting from commercial areas and malls to neighborhoods for a few reasons: 1. Spillover: geographic expansion. The homes are close to the riot and looting, so the chaos just naturally bleeds over. Riots do not respect the boundaries between commercial, civic, and residential districts (though they often follow actual physical features). •Rioters, looters, and spectators move along streets into adjoining neighborhoods, sometimes without any particular destination. •Displacement: Police dispersal operations push crowds away from commercial districts and into surrounding residential streets. •Breaking into smaller groups that scatter rioters/looters through the surrounding area and some continue vandalizing or looting independently discovering other opportunities for theft, etc. This is particularly relevant to older urban neighborhoods where houses, apartments, storefronts, and commercial corridors are closely intermingled. A residential street one block from a looted shopping district may be exposed simply because it lies along a natural route of movement. Spillover does not necessarily mean that rioters have decided to attack residential neighborhoods. 2. Targeted. As we saw in 2020 in some cases, the neighborhoods are the destination for protests, riots, or looting to "take it to the suburbs" for political or racial reasons. This is often to make people feel unsafe in their homes to intimidate them. Pogroms often happen this way. •Affluent neighborhoods may be selected because their residents symbolize wealth, privilege, or a political and economic establishment. In this situation, the neighborhood itself becomes a symbolic target. •Individual residences may become destinations because of the occupant's public position, political activity, reputation, or association. i.e. when mobs showed up outside Tucker Carlson's house. •The crowd does not necessarily need to enter homes or destroy property to achieve its objective. 3. Nothing else to loot. Once the stores and other, richer targets are emptied, they switch to residential areas because they are largely untouched and are remaining sources of lootable value. •Residential burglary is generally different from commercial looting. A store offers concentrated merchandise; a neighborhood requires movement between individual properties. It is more personal and represents a more bold and depraved set of looters who are willing to transgress into more "respected" spaces (houses) than simply violate a public space like a store where the harm is less individualized. •The longer the breakdown of law enforcement persists, the more ordinary criminal behavior can become intertwined with the original riot. The people burglarizing homes days later may not be the same people who participated in the original disturbance. 4. The collapse of deterrence. Residential crime can expand even when commercial targets remain available, simply because the consequences of criminal activity have disappeared or gone down. •When police are overwhelmed, absent, or concentrating their resources elsewhere, offenders may conclude that residential burglary and robbery have become easier to commit without apprehension. This can be seen in a by looters targeting evacuated areas. •This is not necessarily the physical expansion of a riot, disaster, etc. but it is the expansion of lawlessness created by the event. •Crime may extend beyond property crime to personal violence simply because the chances of being caught or punished are less, empowering criminals who'd otherwise be deterred.
🇫🇷 The chaos in France is getting even MORE DISTURBING Looters are now reportedly targeting WEALTHY HOMES, with security camera footage appearing to show intruders breaking into private residences. First the shops, then the businesses, and now people's homes? HOW MUCH FURTHER IS THIS GOING TO ESCALATE? 😨 Writer: Sol

It's amazing the outsized effort a few white dudes in shorts had. You might like my book. Lessons From the Rhodesian Bush War amzn.to/44KFxWs
i’m from the deep south and i know about blacks. white aggression is terrifying to most blacks and it works. a large loud white man such as myself has had no issue living in the hood for 2 years. also, look towards rhodesian history. groups of like 6-20 white rhodesian soldiers routinely fought back hundreds of ZANU and ZAPU troops at a time. there’s even dozens of instances of armed white mothers defending their homes from 20-30+ african men with a rifle

Trump pisses me off in a lot of ways and in retrospect Reagan was no angel, but it's really nice to have an affable President who actually loves this country. Kind of like cheering for the loveable team that always looses (I'm looking at you Cubs).

I have this 20-something female neighbor who lives alone. I learned the other day she doesn't own a TV. "But then how do you watch stuff?" On her phone on the bed or couch holding her phone or her laptop on a tray in the bedroom or on her coffee table. 😵 I got a 55" for <$300.

I told you something was off with housing and the economy.
Dinner with an exec/friend at a large national property management company tonight. This person oversees ~150k apartments; access to an insane amount of data. Current multifamily market in most of the country is worse than S&L, .com bust, or the GFC. Worst they’ve seen. Class A mostly fine, decent rent growth. However: - credit scores at class A have gone down meaningfully over the past 3 years. - more people are paying rent via credit card. - average bank account balance noticeably lower than even 2 years ago - class A tenants stretched thin, living beyond their means. 20k comes in, 20k goes out every month. - starting to see these renters move down a tier Class B: - simply too many apartments, we built too much new stuff. Ripple effect is enormous. - fewer renters tomorrow than today. Same store foot traffic noticeably down year over year. Some markets down 40-50% - considering dropping rents below $700 a month on some 1beds in major southern markets. Class C: - looking at degrading NOI. Rents aren’t growing for a long time, but expenses keep creeping up - more renters are one missed paycheck away from disaster than they can remember seeing in decades - tenants aren’t paying rent because they simply don’t have it - wage growth has not kept up Lenders: - some major investment funds, household names, haven’t paid their mortgages in 2-3 years. Banks won’t foreclose because “X is a big client.” Mexican standoff. - a roof leak gets ignored, becomes water damage, then mold, then a down building. Buildings are rapidly deteriorating as some owners choose cash preservation over funding losses. - number of pre-foreclosure and REO deals is the highest as a % of total units they can recall. - data providers know it’s bad, but they’re paid to sell optimism to owners/lenders. So every forecast is “it will probably get a little better next year maybe” and that gets regurgitated at investment committees all over. I asked “how do you think this ends?” “Not sure. My gut says slowly then suddenly, and things will get really bad. Been doing this 40 years, you can feel it in the air. But, there’s a chance it’s just a decade of tolerable pain. I’m praying for that.”

I think it's interesting that I can go basically anywhere and make friends with random dudes but the second you introduce females into the equation it gets weird, even if there is no sexual competition going on. A group of underage guys at the country bar posted up to GF and I. They mistook me for security and were nervous. I laughed and told them nope, it's date night. They relaxed. We BS'd and had fun. Same place, but with GF and her friends. Everything felt awkward. Got along okay with one (one!) of the talkative guys, but the conversation died out more than if the females weren't there, even when they weren't around. Just a really odd dynamic that groups of known or semi-known people bring. Better off talking to strangers one-on-one.

Hey, I remember that. 30 years ago! Wait...
Nearly three decades ago, a powerful winter storm sent torrents of muddy water through Camarillo streets, flooded homes and businesses, stranded motorists and overwhelmed a drainage channel near City Hall. Link in bio.

Something is going on with the economy. My complex has an unusually high number of open units and primo ones. I was looking at moving to a whole other place and the condo was on the market for over two months. House supply is low, apartment/condo supply is high. Weird.

On top of this I feel like I hardly see people out anymore. Few people walking their dogs in the street or people going wherever. Traffic and parking is less. Bars are emptier. My nature spots have less outdoors enjoyers. Stores feel less packed. It's like people are hiding.
