On my way to work I stopped at a @UniteLondonEast demo to support a pay rise for low paid workers at Guy's & St Thomas'. Hospital porters, food service assistants, rapid response staff - the NHS needs them all. Fair pay, safe staffing, save our NHS. #NHSBAND2WONTDO

More coverage of the early closure of Antarctica’s krill fishery. The fishery closed in August after reaching the 620,000-tonne catch limit, nearly three months before the season was due to end. It was the second year in a row that the limit had been reached early. The concern is not simply how much krill is being caught, but where the fishing is concentrated. Krill sit at the heart of the Southern Ocean food web. Whales, penguins, seals, seabirds and fish depend on them, while fishing is increasingly concentrated in important wildlife feeding areas. The Trump administration is considering handing over parts of Yosemite National Park to developers, despite the National Park Service and courts rejecting this type of proposal for over two decades.

Here's a radical idea: What if we used materials that don't harm humans, wildlife, and the environment? ☣️ In 2024, an international team of scientists with #PlastChem published a report, in which they painstakingly inventoried tens of thousands of chemicals in plastics. The report revealed that there are 16,000+ chemicals in plastics (more than previously known) and at least 26% are currently classified as highly hazardous to humans and the environment. Their research shows us just how hazardous and widespread plastic chemicals are. ☣️ More than 400 hazardous chemicals of concern were found present in each major plastic type tested, including food packaging, and all tested plastics contained hazardous chemicals that can leach into food, homes, the environment, and human bodies. ☣️ The research shows that there are 3,000 more plastic chemicals than previously known, with more than 16,000 chemicals included in the PlastChem database, which accompanies the report. ☣️ To date, information about the chemicals in plastics has been kept largely proprietary by the plastics industry. Experts had to carefully test plastics to determine which chemicals they contain. ☣️ The PlastChem project aims to address the fragmented understanding of the chemicals in plastics and their impact on health and the environment. 👏 This initiative has created a high-quality, comprehensive state-of-the-science report synthesizing the evidence about chemicals in plastics to inform an evidence-based policy development for better protecting public health and the environment. Experts with the #PlastChem Project stress the need to find new and improved ways to regulate plastic chemicals, including hazard-based identification of groups of plastic chemicals of concern. 🌀 Read the report and explore the database: ow.ly/y9g750XrYiO #PlasticPollutes #BreakFreeFromPlastic

Wikie and her son Keijo, the last two captive orcas in France, have spent their entire lives at Marineland Antibes. The park closed in January 2025 amid declining attendance and a French law phasing out whale and dolphin performances and captivity, but the two orcas remain there. Most of the park’s veterinary staff and animal caregivers have reportedly been dismissed since the closure, though officials say a reduced crew continues to provide basic care. Photojournalist Seph Lawless has spent months documenting Wikie and Keijo and started a petition calling on France to secure a safe, transparent relocation plan. More than 91,000 people have signed, urging independent veterinary oversight and asking that mother and son remain together unless experts determine otherwise. Read or sign the petition here: c.org/9hXDFgcn #Orcas #Animals

One of the main causes of GHG emissions is animal farming - methane from animal digestion & manure & carbon dioxide from deforestation for grazing land. One easy step you can take, to make a sizeable impact - switch to a plant-based diet 🌱

A single 400-year-old ancient oak produces 234,000 litres of oxygen a year while soaking up carbon dioxide, and can support more than 2,000 species of bird, insect, fungus, and lichen. Nature is amazing - we need more of it, not less. Please repost if you agree 🌳

Remembering the amazing Dolly Parton and thank her for the joy she brought to this world! RIP! #dollyparton
Dolly Parton was a true American icon. First introduced to the world as a "little girl from up in East Tennessee," she became a global superstar. Her career accolades included 11 Grammy awards, an Emmy, an honorary Oscar, and — my favorite — more than 300 million books sent to millions of children around the world through her Imagination Library. All at once she was kind, modest, and funny. With her music, her philanthropy, and her style, Dolly was one of one. Doug and I send our prayers to her family, friends, and all those who have been touched by her magic. We will always love you, Dolly.

Colombia has banned all new oil and mining projects in its Amazon rainforest, protecting one of the most biodiverse places on Earth. 🇨🇴Even more incredible? This protected region now covers 42% of the country — an area roughly the size of Sweden.
