The King bumped into Sir Idris Elba on a Visit to a historic naval base, with the famous British actor telling him “sorry about the Prime Minister.” The actor asked: “How are you doing though, are you having a good time? Sorry about the prime minister.” The actor was likely referring to Andy Burnham’s comments saying he was “open” to apologising for Britain’s role in the slave trade.

I have no party political loyalties but, this response to the current hostile grifting seems the right one to me…
Burnham has no knowledge of our history. Nobody has done more to abolish the slave trade than Britain. We have more than paid our reparations. Reform will never cave in to this nonsense and will ban visas from any country that continues to demand reparations from Britain.

On behalf of the British people, I would like to apologise for the slave trade. I am sorry we were the first great power in history to turn its guns on it. I am sorry it cost us around 2,000 sailors to free 150,000 people they would never meet. I am sorry the rest of the world took so long to follow. Slavery did not begin with Britain. It is as old as civilisation. Babylon wrote it into law. Rome built an empire on it. The Vikings sold Englishmen through the slave market at Dublin. In 1625 Barbary corsairs took 60 men, women and children out of a Cornish church; by 1640 Parliament was told 3,000 to 5,000 English people were held in Algiers alone. Every great power of the age took part in the Atlantic trade. Portugal and Spain for a century before an English ship did. Then the Dutch, the French — and the British, who in the eighteenth century carried more than anyone. That is the record. It is not disputed here. Then a nation turned on the trade that had made it rich. Wilberforce's bill was beaten year after year. On 25 March 1807 it passed. Then Britain did the part the critics never mention — it sent the Royal Navy to enforce it. The West Africa Squadron sailed in 1808, two ships for 3,000 miles of coast, and hunted slavers for nearly sixty years. Britain paid Spain and Portugal to open their ships to search. HMS Black Joke ran down the slaver El Almirante in 1829 and found 466 people in her hold. Around 2,000 British sailors died doing it — most of fever, to free people they would never meet. 1,600 slave ships seized. 150,000 Africans set free. In 1833 Parliament borrowed £20 million to end slavery across the Empire. The debt was not finally redeemed until 2015. The United States needed a civil war. Cuba held slaves until 1886. Brazil until 1888 — eighty-one years after Westminster voted. Yes, we took part in the trade. Every power of the age did. None of them fought it like we did. So yes. I will apologise. I am sorry it cost us so much. I am sorry the rest of the world took so long to follow. That is not something you apologise for. That is something you teach. #history #britishhistory #royalnavy #westafricasquadron

Difficult to argue with @KemiBadenoch position on this…. I’m in Antigua for CHOGM and I can tell you the reparations issue is NOT widely felt my many of the 56 member nations - there is deep annoyance this is distracting from a more positive future for the Commonwealth and it’s purpose. @commonwealthsec
“I want [the Commonwealth] to become more serious” Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch says she wants the Commonwealth to be an organisation that “promotes the Anglosphere” and that Britain shouldn’t issue a formal apology for the slave trade #BBCLauraK bbc.co.uk/programmes/m001bv0…

Nicola Sturgeon can recount every detail of a conversation 10 years ago with Donald Trump, but apparently has “no knowledge or memory” of a £124k motorhome her ex husband bought with SNP money and parked at her mother-in-law’s for two years.
Nicola Sturgeon has revealed a 'mad' conversation she had with US president Donald Trump while she was Scotland's first minister 👀

I cannot believe the BBC is wheeling out Nicola Sturgeon as a political commentator. I know they're struggling financially, with millions refusing to pay the TV licence, but this really is scraping the barrel. Sturgeon's political career ended in disgrace, and after decades campaigning for Scottish independence, she packed her bags and moved to London. Now she's lecturing us on British politics from the BBC sofa. You couldn't make it up.

Browne’s government simply doesn’t have public support for such a move which is why he distanced himself from the idea only in June this year.

Browne clearly has a radical agenda - perhaps he will be replaced before he has an opportunity to enact it…
Just back from the office of the Antiguan Prime Minister, Gaston Browne. • insisted UK must continue to pay reparations for its role in the slavery despite Andy Burnham‘s change of approach on an apology. • Browne lashed out at Kemi Badenoch after she said UK should stop apologising for the past: “no wonder she is the leader of the Opposition and not the Prime Minister.” • Despite hosting King Charles and Commonwealth summit this week, Mr Browne said he wanted to replace the British Monarch as head of state and for Antigua to become a republic.

I agree - this should alarm all free-thinking people. Perhaps they should be obliged to subscribe to the notion of Original Sin also?
How can universities have gone through centuries of Reformation and Enlightenment, only to return to the imposition of quasi-religious dogma, prescribed social orthodoxy, and a Test Act?

If this is all accurate, it is one of the most flagrant attacks on academic freedom and attempts to use university promotion procedures to enforce ideological conformity. It should be opposed with every weapon available. telegraph.co.uk/news/2026/11…
