Throughout the entire Fare Hike saga, Government maintained this was a decision by the NTA
We now know it was the Dept of Public Expenditure & it was decided 12 months ago
Government lied to to the public, the did it repeatedly, & they did it intentionally
Minister Canney’s approach to road safety has failed, and now it appears that reform of the RSA is back on the cards
He never should have scrapped the reform in the first place
The minister responsible for road safety has said there is no acceptable form of phone usage for drivers and drivers should put their phone in the glove box.
Asked whether it was acceptable to use Google Maps, the minister did not give a clear answer.

Cllr. Feljin Jose has created a new tool tracking the implementation (and delays) to BusConnects
Government decided to increase your fares from January. Please keep an eye on this tracker, and use it to demand they deliver the results you’re paying for
feljin.ie/newbusroutes/
BusConnects is not only responsible for the expansion of public transport services, there’s also a significant portion of future cycle routes tied up in them
The congestion you sit in every day is a political choice by this Government
Remind them of it
irishtimes.com/opinion/2026/…
Minister Canney is now suggesting gimmicks like renaming the RSA & hiring influencers instead of reforms, safe road speeds and better enforcement
Irish road death rates are getting worse every year and he has nothing to offer but lip service
independent.ie/irish-news/mi…
It would be terrific if the politicians responsible for making the laws in this country bothered to learn what they were before speaking in Leinster House
irishcycle.com/2026/10/09/mi…
Without fare hikes “the department would not be able to fund the expansion of public transport services”
- Minister Daragh O’Brien
This is false, the NTA admitted they wanted fares to be 44% of their budget, they just didn’t ask for the extra money
thejournal.ie/budget-2027-pu…
Promoting the budget at Commuters who’ve just had their fares hiked by at least 15% is certainly a choice….
You have to wonder what Fine Gael were thinking this morning??
thejournal.ie/canvass-fine-g…
“Show us your budget, & we’ll show you your priorities”
It’s certainly not Transport after two consecutive Government budgets that focus on cars & roads instead of Public Transport that is Affordable, Reliable & Frequent
dublincommuters.ie/post/budg…
“Just correcting what was there”
The Minister’s flippant disregard for one of the most important Public Transport measures in a generation is as disgraceful as his lack of personal accountability when it comes to road safety
So much for “helping workers who get up early”
“Putting money back in workers pockets”
By making it more expensive for them to take public transport to work
- Taoiseach Micheál Martin
🙄

Meanwhile public transport users are facing fare increases of 15%-50%+ in some cases over a 12 month period 😣

Dublin Commuters retweeted
We are delighted to be attending this fantastic lecture tonight titled “Reframing road safety with Tom Flood”.
Chaired by @jasoncullenfilm from @DublinCommuters Tom gave a wonderful presentation around transferring his very successful media career in Canada to shifting his skills over to advocating for safe secure cycle and independently mobile infrastructure especially for communities and especially our children.
Afterwards a brilliant Q&A was had and Bernard got to ask some questions in relation to disabilities and independent mobility, the answers Tom gave were very much in the vain of someone who champions safe and inclusive independent mobility, more of this we say!!!!
Don’t forget we’ll be protesting this evening at Leinster House to stop the fare hikes!!
Protest 🪧
Location: Leinster House
Date: Today - Thursday 17th Sept
Time: 6pm
If you haven’t emailed your TD’s yet, we have a template email below 👇

The NTA does not have an €800m hole in their budget
They have a €70m hole which is what the fare hikes are to cover
PSO routes will never be 100% funded by fares; it’s Government funds that are supposed to keep it affordable
Public transport fare hikes necessary to help plug €800m funding gap, says transport body irishtimes.com/transport/202…
The public transport fares hike must be stopped!!
Join us at Leinster House on Thursday to protest and make our voices heard

Any tax relief coming in budget 2027 for “People who get up early in the morning and go to Work” has already been eaten up by Governments 15%+ increase to public transport fares
Please email your TDs now and demand they reverse the decision!!
