“Look at young people and the barriers they are facing, just to get on the first rung of employment.” - President @vonderleyen
This is a question very much on my mind: how do we make that first opportunity easier to reach? Through #YouthChecks and our direct #dialogue with young people, we are bringing their experience earlier into EU policymaking. And it will be central as we prepare the next #EUYouthStrategy.

In Valletta we met with @EU_Commission Executive Vice-President for Cohesion and Reforms @RaffaeleFitto to discuss the vital role of EU Cohesion Policy for islands and peripheral regions, strengthening connectivity, competitiveness and resilience.
Ongoing negotiations on the next MFF must respond to emerging pressures, while safeguarding our commitment to convergence, cohesion and resilience across the Union.

🇬🇧 This morning in #Malta I visited the new reverse osmosis desalination plant in Ħondoq, in Gozo.
A strategic project worth around €165 million, also supported by #Europeanfunds, which strengthens the island’s water security and improves water quality.
With a production capacity of 9,000 m³ per day, the plant ensures a more secure water supply for Gozo, making the island self-sufficient in terms of water.
Water management is a challenge of fundamental importance across Europe, and it is important to see efficient and concrete projects, supported by cohesion policy resources, that deliver direct benefits for citizens.

🇬🇧 This morning in Gozo I visited the Cittadella, which has been the focus of an important rehabilitation project carried out also thanks to cohesion policy funds.
This intervention has helped restore and enhance one of the island’s most symbolic sites, improving accessibility and the overall visitor experience while fully respecting its extraordinary cultural heritage.
European funding has already supported this path, but it is essential to continue investing in the protection and enhancement of the Cittadella so that it can remain a cultural landmark and a driver of development for the territory.

Prolonged conflict in the Middle East continues to pose serious humanitarian, political and security challenges far beyond the region, including for Europe. In uncertain times such as these, the EU must strengthen its capacity to unite and deliver.
I made these remarks earlier this afternoon when addressing a meeting of the Heads of Missions of EU member states in Malta, hosted by the High Commissioner of Cyprus in Malta @ChristofidesY as part of the Cypriot Presidency of the EU @CY2026EU.
I also commended the Cypriot Presidency for its leadership at a particularly demanding moment for the European Union, when our collective ability to demonstrate strategic direction, credibility and preparedness is more important than ever.

I welcome the strong message Malta has sent to migrant smugglers. In 17 days, 48 migrants who arrived irregularly were returned using the EU instrument for readmission cooperation.
We must make returns more efficient. The upcoming Return Regulation will help do just that.
