From time to time, I get asked about books on market microstructure. It's crazy to think, but one of the best books on that topic is any Series 57 study book.
It's difficult to truly understand the plumbing that goes into trading U.S equities and derivatives without grasping the basics covered in that book. I believe juniors interested in trading would find it valuable.
Some examples are listed below.
- Stabilizing bids
- Position limits
- SSR impact on takers
- Volatility halts and imbalance crosses
- ADFs / ATSs
- Reporting requirements
- Quote minimums
- Trade through protections
- MPIDs for ADF participants
- Large trade requirements
- OCC assignment procedure
- In house margin reqs vs regulatory margin reqs
Etc

It’s a difficult conversation to have unless you have traded through it. I remember trading long deltas on TVIX around eight years ago, and the PB was just doubling margin reqs daily for three straight days.
