Seven months in and the ongoing crisis in the Gulf has become the ultimate stress test for defense alliances. While the headlines focus on the frontline, the quiet strength behind UK–Kuwait security relations is delivering a masterclass in modern defense strategy.
Here is what the latest regional escalation reveals about how high-stakes defense partnerships are adapting:
1. Restraint Meets Real Capability: Rather than jumping into offensive operations, the UK doubled down on precise, defensive support. The deployment of high-tech assets like the Rapid Sentry air-defense system and the RAF's ORCUS counter-drone technology directly reinforced Kuwait’s airspace when missile and drone threats spiked.
2. Beyond One-Way Guarantees: Strategic alliance is no longer a charity—it’s an economic and technological ecosystem. Kuwait’s landmark £370 million contract with British defense firm MARSS Systems brings AI-enabled counter-drone tech to the Gulf while backing 100 skilled UK jobs. Defense cooperation goes both ways.
3.Deep Roots, Modern Agility: From #OperationVantage in 1961 to the 1991 liberation coalition, Britain's historical commitment isn't just nostalgia. Institutional frameworks like the UK-Kuwait Joint Steering Group (JSG) and ongoing high-level defense visits ensure that diplomatic alignment instantly turns into tactical coordination on the ground.
4. Securing Global Supply Chains: Defense doesn't end at national borders. With France and 50+ international partners, joint multilateral efforts to secure critical maritime choke points—like the #StraitOfHormuz—show how regional stability directly protects global trade.
The UK-Kuwait partnership proves that timely defensive support and strategic reciprocity build true resilience.

Looking forward to being part of Art Connects Women 2026 and meeting inspiring women artists from across the world.
A great opportunity to discuss the 🇪🇺 EU's commitment to empowering women and advancing their participation in arts and culture, as well as sustainability and AI.
We are deeply honoured to welcome H.E. Lucie Berger, Ambassador of the European Union to the United Arab Emirates, as a distinguished Keynote Speaker at the Art Connects Women 9th Edition Conference, taking place on 13 November 2026 in Dubai.
A distinguished diplomat with extensive experience in international relations, climate action, and multilateral cooperation, H.E. @BergerLucie brings an exceptional perspective on the intersection of diplomacy, sustainability, and international collaboration.
Having served in various strategic roles within the European Commission, including the Directorate-General for Climate Action, she has contributed to shaping regional climate cooperation strategies and advancing international negotiations under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).
Her commitment to strengthening international partnerships and advancing sustainable development resonates deeply with the vision of Art Connects Women and our belief in the transformative power of culture as a catalyst for positive change.
Under the theme “Educate to Empower”, this year's edition brings together 115 women artists from 115 countries, celebrating the power of education, cultural exchange, and women's leadership in shaping a more inclusive and sustainable future.
We look forward to an inspiring exchange of perspectives and insights from H.E. Lucie Berger as we explore how diplomacy, culture, and collective action can contribute to a better tomorrow.

How many talented women never get the chance to lead?
I asked that question today at @Europarl_EN.
Under the #PactfortheMediterranean, we are contributing with €10 million to the Surging Women’s Employment Initiative to create 500,000 additional jobs for women by 2030.
We must support young women, help them build networks and give them a say in public life.
This is my wish for every girl, on every shore of the Mediterranean, to grow up knowing she belongs wherever decisions are made.

#Oman’s Sultan Haitham bin Tariq recently concluded a three-day state visit to the #UK, the first by an Omani ruler since 1982. Beyond the ceremony, it shows an old friendship becoming a structured strategic partnership. It is time for the international community, especially #Europe, to understand that:
A. #Muscat and #London share deep concern for the #StraitOfHormuz, with Oman safeguarding freedom of navigation and the UK focused on energy security and trade routes. Their defence ties run back to the Saif Sareea exercises of 1986, well before the 2019 Joint Defence Agreement, and Oman remains a vital diplomatic bridge in the Gulf.
B. The economic ambition is real but not yet delivered. The new Sovereign Partnership for Investment Cooperation and Encouragement links the #OIA with the UK’s Office for Investment, aligning #Oman2040 with British growth goals in #AI, green growth and space. The full commercial potential still depends on ratification and implementation of the #UKGCC Free Trade Agreement.

#LanaNusseibeh’s entry into the race for the next #UN Secretary General is a reminder that who gets heard in international diplomacy still matters. #Diplomacy has long been male-dominated, and the #MiddleEast is too often discussed by voices from outside the region. As the first woman to serve as the #UAE’s Permanent Representative to the UN (2013-2024), Lana Nusseibeh brings an #arab perspective into debates on conflict and security, and shows young women that senior roles in foreign policy are within reach.

As #Gulf states open their economies to foreign capital, the legal ties between the #GCC and the #US are being reshaped by a double movement. Liberalisation is advancing in the Gulf, while regulatory control is tightening on both sides. It is time for #business leaders, #investors and policymakers in #Europe and beyond to understand that:
A. Reform in the Gulf is real. #SaudiArabia’s #Vision2030 regime promises equal treatment for foreign investors, the #UAE has dropped Emirati majority ownership for many onshore businesses, and many sectors across the GCC now allow 100% foreign ownership and full profit repatriation.
B. Openness does not mean less risk. US firms in the region face #FCPA anti-corruption rules, stricter #AML regimes, tougher data protection and cybersecurity laws, and indirect exposure to US #sanctions. Gulf investors in the US must pass #CFIUS national security review and antitrust scrutiny. Treaties and international arbitration are the key tools for managing both.

Dalla Russia all’Iran, il terrorismo sponsorizzato dagli Stati cambia natura.
