just remember: against all odds, you lived in an era when you got to listen to emmylou harris, dolly parton, & linda ronstadt harmonize. what a privilege.
I have nothing to add to the academic wars everyone is engaging in right now except to say: social media is not real life, most academics are doing good work, that to survive, we have to believe in the good faith of our colleagues, and that self-righteousness is yucky

I’ve been marching for LGBTQ+ rights since Pride was considered a protest — and these shorts were in style.
And I’m proud to keep marching as a celebration of hope in our state today.
The LGBTQ+ community has a proud ally in the Governor’s Office 365 days a year.
Historian here:
The Founders did NOT have slavery on their minds when they came up with the Electoral College. It was a last minute, complicated mechanism that came out VERY late in the debates. Heck, slavery loving North Carolina+South Carolina AND Georgia vote against the EC!
Rantz: I'm going to say that it had nothing to do with slavery.
Blow: That's not true. For this man to sit here and say it has nothing to do with slavery. What did you learn in school?
Rantz: I’m not arguing it doesn’t play a role.
Blow: You just said that!
Navarro: You were just schooled on TV.
Rantz: I was not schooled.
Navarro: You were absolutely schooled. Your ignorance was revealed.
In the early republic, the president who most benefited from the Electoral college was slavery-HATING John Quincy Adams. You know who called for abolishing the EC for a direct election (after losing to JQA)? His opponent, slave OWNING Andrew Jackson.
“To fight against slaveholders without fighting against slavery is but a half-hearted business. Fire must be met with water. War for the destruction of liberty must be met with war for the destruction of slavery.”
-Frederick Douglass, May 1861

Interesting new note from NEH: “Your terminated NEH award is eligible for reinstatement pursuant to the rulings issued on May 7, 2026.” I look forward to digging into the attached strings, but congrats to the ACLS, AHA, and MLA for getting us this far.
All the World Cup posts shocked at American sport culture and the nation’s mind blowing stadiums reminds me of Stephen Fry’s reaction visiting Alabama in 2007:
Hoosiers are an immensely talented people.
Proud Hoosier here.
I want to introduce you to Steve. He’s 83. His wife died a few months ago and he comes to this lodge in Spring Mill, Indiana and draws. He taught art in Terre Haute, IN his whole life. He also did courtroom sketches in court cases. In the comments I’ll share some pics from his sketchbook. He was excited when I said I was going to share his sketches with the world.

Česká reprezentace, která během základní skupiny pobývá v texaském městě Fort Worth, přijala pozvání městské samosprávy k návštěvě místní čtvrti Stockyards. 🇺🇸

Fans from around the world seeing America firsthand is a reminder that our diverse culture is our biggest strength as a people. Not the size of our military or our present cultish obsession with power, but our kindness, our food, our humor, and our inventiveness. #fifaworldcup
