Had a very productive conversation with J over the weekend. It's hard because I want to share more details of his situation in hopes of getting advice/suggestions, but I also don't want to go posting his business all over the internet, no matter how anonymous I'm keeping it. He explained his reasoning for the action that I interpreted as a step backward, and while I understand that reasoning, I do not believe it's a real solution to his predicament. But the alternative isn't a good solution either. Even though this is far beyond anything I've experienced myself and I can't relate in any way whatsoever, I recognize that there's no correct answer. It's 100% choosing the lesser of 2 evils.
He did get pretty candid and said he's at a point in his life where he knows he needs to make some changes, and that I'm one of the influences behind that (so yay, being a light is partially working at least). He said above all, he's going to focus on self-improvement. If that fixes his situation, great. If it just means he comes out the other side a better person, then that's all he can ask for. So it does sound like he's starting to get on the right track, but where precisely that track will take him, I don't know. He brought up the invitations to church, both from me and the fellow dad from his son's football team, and said he's had multiple people or things bring up the topic of God lately. He admitted that feels significant. I told him I thought it would be REALLY good if he went to that men's group the other dad invited him to. He said yeah, he really doesn't have any friends, and that seems like a good place to make some friends and connections.

I actually gave him a little men's devotional that just has a short daily blurb with some applicable scripture. You can either follow it by date or check the index to find specific topics. He told me the next day that he opened to a random page and it was about a subject we've discussed at length, and he found that very interesting. Same, tbh. And during our initial conversation when he was talking about wanting to reset and make some changes, I was like dude, I have a verse I have to send you. Jeremiah 18:1-4 had come up in one of my own devotionals a few days prior, and I'd screenshotted it just because I thought it was cool. But it ended up being so applicable to what he was talking about.
So I will continue praying for wisdom for him, that he can figure out what direction he wants his life to go and then identify the best path to get there. I say "best" rather than "correct," because, as I said, I'm still not sure if there's one "correct" answer here. He's gonna have to make some choices. I still pray that he'll be willing to get to know Jesus—I think that alone could help so much.
Friends, if you would, please continue praying for my friend J. There’s been…possibly not a full step backward, but at least a loss of forward momentum. Pray that he can find the sense of love and self-worth he craves in Jesus. Pray that he can find the strength and courage needed to get himself out of the situation he’s in (it’s very complicated and I truly don’t know what the solution is myself). Pray for his 10 y/o son who is caught in the middle of everything.
I was talking to a mutual friend at the gym who’s kind of both of our “gym mom,” and she was telling me she touched his hair (he recently got a major haircut) and gave him a hug and he texted her later thanking her for it. So that’s kind of a hint of what we’re dealing with.
And please pray for me that I can find a balance between doing what I can to help and letting go of the parts I can’t control. I went for a walk this afternoon and just talked out loud to God for the duration. Probably looked like a crazy person, especially since some tears were being shed. But man, I’ve never been a particularly empathetic person and this has all been affecting me in such a weird way. Maybe it’s a GOOD thing thing I’m not very empathetic because I can’t imagine caring this much about literally everything 😅
I’ve already floated the idea past my family of inviting J and his son to join us for Thanksgiving dinner, assuming they don’t have any other plans. Everyone’s already on board. Need to gauge his situation a little more first, but will probably extend the invite sooner rather than later just so it’s on the table. I think they could both stand to spend a little time in a welcoming family environment.
Really liking how this is turning out 🤩. Wanted to go with kind of an outdoorsy color scheme, but Michael’s was out of the floss color I’d planned on using for “fish” so I had to improvise. Now I need to update the whole template because I like this new color better than the one I’d originally picked.
One time I introduced a character already knowing death was on the menu and I still made myself sad 😂
With another, it struck me somewhere in book 4 that the character would need to die in book 5. Still made me sad, but the story also called for it, and I think it was for the best.
