Countries recognize that invading for oil carries too high a material and reputational cost, writes @EMeierding. So why has the United States intervened in Venezuela to take control of its oil production?
Not rooting for either team in this World Series, but as an @Athletics fan, the idea of a Dodgers sweep that minimizes @MLB ad revenue is *chef’s kiss*

It took me a while to come to understand that Russia has nurtured many of these "frozen conflicts" with the semi-explicit intent of destabilizing the politics of the home countries. Russia does not want the disputes to be resolved because it considers them a feature, not a bug.

Eager to read @EmmaMAshford's book "Oil, the State, and War," forthcoming on 6/1.
@EMeierding calls it "agenda-setting," and @ProfTalmadge says it's "essential reading for anyone seeking to understand the critical role of oil in global politics."

We’ve apparently reached the “It’s an oil war!” stage of explanations for Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Here’s my take on 3 versions of that argument.
[THREAD]
Denial is much easier than exploitation because the core goal is to keep the resources in the ground. So none of the obstacles mentioned above apply. But if sanctions also target Russia’s oil sales, the invasion could end up being a net loss.
