icymi last week: I've got a new @reason newsletter! It's part digest of Reason content, part new commentary, focused more on culture & pop culture than hard news. Might be fun? That's the idea at least. Please subscribe so they don't send me back to the short-form video mines!
In this week’s @reason Unregulated: horrifying Halloween decorations, aura farm-to-table politics, peptide realism, 17th Century shotgun marriages, mid-aughts mommy wars, and more… reasonmagazine.substack.com/…

Next week, about 550 free speech advocates and thought leaders will descend on Philadelphia for @TheFIREorg's first-ever Soapbox conference.
Believe it or not, in FIRE's 27-year history, we've never hosted a general-audience free speech conference. We've hosted student and faculty conferences, but nothing like this. We figured the 250th anniversary of American independence was as fitting a time as any to give it a try.
We had no idea what to expect. Would anyone buy tickets? Conference experts told us most tickets are sold in the weeks leading up to an event. Instead, we sold out two months in advance!
America's free speech movement is growing, and its members are eager to meet one another.
I'll deliver the opening keynote, "The Fight for Free Speech," a nod to the title of the ACLU's first annual report in 1921. The talk will summarize the story I tell in my forthcoming book: how civil libertarians fought to make the promise of the First Amendment a reality.
Other speakers include @nickgillespie, @LarryLessig, @prestonjbyrne, @ENBrown, @CaseyMattox_, @chrisbest, @RosenJeffrey, @FreeRangeKids, @sapinker, @Musa_alGharbi, @marcorandazza, @AdamThierer, @DavidAFrench, @whignewtons, the @wethefifth guys, @ishapiro, @noam_dworman, @JohnHMcWhorter, @mtaibbi, and many, many more.
I can't wait to see you all next week. And if you can't make it, I hope to see you at the next one. Just be sure to get your tickets early!

In 2010, inspired by this long-since-forgotten but then-current controversy, I went to a Halloween party in DC dressed as “secret foreign money.” When I got to the party I ran into a friend who had independently had the same idea and was ALSO dressed as secret foreign money
once, in the late Bush era, I was at a DC Halloween party where someone with a faux-pregnant belly, a statue of liberty torch and, like, a Quran or something told me they were "the birth pangs of democracy in the Middle East"

This is the kind of tech panic that strikes me as entirely irrational. “Strangers aren’t talking to each other on the metro!” OK? I just worked all day. I don’t want to chit chat with the lady next to me about the weather. I want to zone out in peace. That’s not a crisis.
On Metro during rush hour, it's gotten to the point where so few people are talking and so many people are on their phones it's almost scary. A train packed with people shouldn't be that quiet! #wmata

My first brush with anonymity was in childhood, in a Catholic confessional. As I write in @BostonGlobe, I think we forget how important anonymity is in our daily lives. It's so routine that we don't even notice we use it.
But we'll miss it when it's gone. And that day is coming.

I hereby consent that if my mummified body is found 2000 years from now, you can display it anywhere you want. A museum or an Arby's, I don't care.
🚨 EXCLUSIVE: Glasgow's Kelvingrove Museum has removed Egyptian mummies from display because there was no 'informed consent from the deceased individual'👇

🚨NEW: The Online Safety Act has been a failure, according to a new report from Ofcom.
Ofcom have found "no significant change" in children encountering harmful content since the law came into effect last July. This is despite the signifigant threats to free speech and privacy.

The thing where one is obliged to pretend to believe this obviously false but politically convenient statistic in order to remain a liberal in good standing is one of those things that used to just kinda grate on me but after 25 years has driven me fully up the wall
