#ERITREA: THE RED SEA IS NOT FOR SALE SOVEREIGNTY ABOVE SUPERPOWER PRESSURE
On December 10, 2002, US Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld arrived in Asmara and met President Isaias Afwerki at Denden Club. Washington was seeking closer cooperation with Eritrea in the post-September 11 global war on terrorism. The strategic importance of Eritrea's Red Sea coastline was impossible to ignore.
But President Isaias delivered a statement that deserves to be remembered:
"We are not offering anything to get anything from the United States."
Those were not merely diplomatic words. They reflected a principle: Eritrea could cooperate with the international community without becoming dependent on it, subordinate to it, or an instrument of its geopolitical ambitions.
Eritrea was prepared to contribute to the fight against terrorism. It was willing to share its limited resources for regional peace and security. But cooperation was never supposed to mean surrendering independent decision-making.
And the story did not end in 2002.
In a revealing 2018 interview with Gulf News, President Isaias disclosed that Washington had previously requested military and intelligence facilities in the Assab area. Eritrea rejected the proposal in principle.
He also explained that Eritrea had refused to deploy its military officers under the US-led Central Command structure in Djibouti. His reasoning was clear: Eritrea would not become a proxy instrument of foreign military command. If terrorism was the challenge, African countries should confront it through their own regional priorities and leadership, not simply operate under someone else's agenda.
Consider the significance of that decision.
Assab sits on one of the most strategically important stretches of the Red Sea. Its location gives it enormous geopolitical and maritime significance. Yet Eritrea refused to treat its coastline as a bargaining chip for foreign military interests.
This was not a rejection of international relations. It was a rejection of unequal relationships.
Eritrea knows the cost of having its destiny determined by others. Its history is marked by foreign calculations, strategic bargains and decisions made over the heads of its people. The struggle for independence was, above all, a struggle to reclaim the right to determine its own future.
That is why sovereignty is not an ornamental word in Eritrea's political vocabulary. It is a historical inheritance, purchased through decades of sacrifice.
The world may measure countries by the size of their economies, military budgets or alliances. Eritrea's position has always insisted on another measure: the right of a nation, however small, to make its own decisions.
America is a superpower. Eritrea does not need to deny that reality. But being a superpower does not give any country ownership over another nation's territory, coastline or strategic choices.
Partnership without subordination. Cooperation without dependency. Friendship without surrender.
The Red Sea may connect continents, powers and economies, but Eritrea's sovereignty is not an international commodity.
Some nations negotiate their independence away for strategic protection. Eritrea's message was different: engage with us as equals, respect our sovereignty, and deal with us on the basis of mutual interests.
History remembers those who seek power. It also remembers those who refuse to surrender their dignity.
ERITREA FIRST. SOVEREIGNTY ALWAYS.
#Eritrea #IsaiasAfwerki #Sovereignty #Assab #RedSea #SelfReliance #HornOfAfrica #AfricaRising #EritreanResilience
A NATION THAT KNOWS THE PRICE OF ITS SOVEREIGNTY.
Eritrea was willing to cooperate with America, but never at the expense of its independence.
Cooperation, yes. Dependency, no. Partnership, yes. Foreign control, never.
The world may bring its superpowers to the Red Sea, but Eritrea's sovereignty is not theirs to claim.
A small nation in size, never in conviction.

In an article published today, November 5, The New York Times reports that it has reviewed a confidential report submitted to the United Nations Security Council less than a week ago. According to the Times, the report provides a detailed account of how the #UAE arranged for Colombian mercenaries group known as the “Desert Wolves” to travel through Libya and Somalia to fight alongside Sudan’s Rapid Support Forces (#RSF) militia.
The Times also draws attention to the politically sensitive timing of the report, as the UAE is advancing the candidacy of its minister, Lana Nusseibeh, for UN Secretary-General. As the newspaper notes, Nusseibeh spent years leading Abu Dhabi’s diplomatic efforts to deny allegations of Emirati involvement in Sudan’s war.
nytimes.com/2026/11/05/world…
As in Sudan, so too in Ethiopia. The UAE employs mercenaries to fight its wars. This is an open admission that the Ethiopian regime’s troops cannot fight the TDF and its allied forces on their own.
#StopMBZ
According to sources, a man identified as Basit Fiwatkorkul is a mercenary linked to Mstar Defense, a Thai private defense contractor allegedly hired by Abu Dhabi to support Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed's government in its military operations in the Tigray region.
The sources further claimed there are strong indications that the company is also involved in supporting Sudan's Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in the Blue Nile region.
Given the perilous situation Ethiopia and the Horn find themselves in, generic statements of concern do more harm than good. It’s time to publicly tell Addis Ababa to stop the many wars it has unleashed . All assistance to the regime should also end.
A stable Ethiopia is vital to the entire region. Any escalation in the #HornofAfrica must be avoided. Germany continues to support efforts to promote stability in northern Ethiopia. - @AussenMinDE in today’s call with @GHessebon .
Yes, the situation in the Horn of Africa is fraught with grave danger. But Abiy, as delusional and criminal as he is, is a mere pawn. The real culprit sowing death and destruction is Mohammed bin Zaid.
#StopMBZ
I have said it time and again: the Horn of Africa is at the centre of a gathering vortex of instability, with Ethiopia under Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed at its epicentre. The expulsion of six Sudanese diplomats, following the expulsion of Eritrean and Egyptian diplomats, represents another dangerous deterioration in regional relations. From the devastation of northern Ethiopia to escalating tensions with Eritrea, Sudan, Egypt, and Somalia, the warning signs are unmistakable. Professor Steve Hanke (@steve_hanke) is right to draw attention to the growing winds of war. The international community must recognize the danger of a wider regional conflagration before it is too late.

@AbdulElSayed has taken a public stance on Sudan, including explicitly calling out the UAE's role in the atrocities.
He has:
Publicly called out the UAE over its role in the genocide in Sudan.
Opposed unconditional US military funding for foreign governments, explicitly including the UAE.
Named Sudanese children alongside children in Gaza when speaking about every child’s right to safety and dignity.
Argued that every child deserves the same protection, regardless of where they are born.
You may be among the very few US candidates who have explicitly spoken about Sudan and called out the UAE’s role in the violence and atrocities committed against our people.
We urge you to continue demanding accountability from the UAE, calling for an end to any support that fuels this war, and pressing for concrete action to protect Sudanese civilians and bring those responsible to justice.
Thank you. We appreciate your principled stance, and we are proud to see Sudan represented in your public advocacy.

#Humera, #Welkait: Is the Horn of Africa Moving Toward a Wider Regional War? The diplomatic escalation under Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, involving Eritrea, Egypt, and now Sudan, must be examined alongside deeply troubling reports that the United Arab Emirates is planning to establish another military facility near Humera, Welkait, one of the most strategically sensitive locations in the Horn of Africa, at the intersection of Ethiopia, Sudan, and Eritrea. I have repeatedly described the UAE as the most intrusive and destructive external power in the Horn of Africa in recent memory. Reports concerning UAE military involvement around Asosa, near Sudan's border, have already raised serious questions about Ethiopia's role in Sudan's devastating war. If the proposed facility near Humera materializes, it would raise an even more fundamental question: to what extent has Ethiopia under Abiy Ahmed become a client state serving the UAE's regional military ambitions? The geographical significance cannot be overstated.
#Humera sits at a critical junction connecting three countries already entangled in profound political and security tensions. The prospect of another foreign military installation there, particularly following Ethiopia's expulsion of Sudanese diplomats, raises the spectre of a wider regional conflagration. Against the backdrop of the catastrophic destruction of northern Ethiopia, the suffering of Amhara and Tigrayan communities, and the continuing carnage in Sudan, this development demands immediate international scrutiny. The African Union, United Nations Security Council, and international media must investigate these reports before another devastating war engulfs the Horn of Africa.

News: #Ethiopia expels #Sudanese diplomats as regional tensions deepen
Addis Abeba — Ethiopia has ordered six Sudanese diplomatic staff members to leave the country within 48 hours, a senior Ethiopian official told Reuters on Wednesday, further escalating tensions between the two neighbors amid competing allegations of support for armed groups and growing fears of a wider regional conflict.
The reported expulsion comes days after Sudan’s army-aligned government said it had lodged formal complaints against Ethiopia with the United Nations Security Council (#UNSC) and the African Union Peace and Security Council (#AUPSC), accusing Addis Abeba of allowing the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (#RSF) to use Ethiopian territory to launch drone attacks against civilian infrastructure in Sudan.
According to Reuters, the six staff members were ordered to leave Sudan’s consulate in #Assosa, the administrative center of #Benishangul-Gumuz Regional State.

Military Source to Sudanese Echo: Damazin Is Secure, Army Redeployment Is Part of an Organised Plan, and Large Forces Have Yet to Enter the Fighting
4 November 2026
A military source contacted by Sudanese Echo for clarification on the latest military developments in the Blue Nile Region has confirmed that the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) have carried out redeployment operations involving several of their units, withdrawing them from certain towns and areas and relocating them to other positions as part of an organised military plan prepared for the next phase of operations.
The source stressed that Damazin, the capital of the Blue Nile Region, remains under the control of the Sudanese Armed Forces, and that there is no imminent threat to the city, contrary to reports circulating that have raised concerns about its military situation.
These clarifications follow the Sudanese Armed Forces' announcement on Tuesday that they had redeployed their troops from the Sali area in the Blue Nile Region, following clashes with the UAE-Backed Rapid Support Militia (Janjaweed), and their allies from the Sudan People's Liberation Movement–North (SPLM-N). Damazin also came under attacks by explosive-laden drones on Tuesday night and early Wednesday morning. The army's air defences intercepted the attacks amid continuing military escalation in the region.
The source dismissed rumours that the road to Sennar and other areas had been left open to an advance by the militia, or that these areas were now without military protection. The source emphasised that the ongoing operations in the Blue Nile Region do not reflect the full military capabilities available to the Sudanese Armed Forces.
The source confirmed that the SAF has substantial military forces and formations deployed across neighbouring states, most of which have not yet participated in the ongoing military operations in the region. These include the Second Infantry Division in Gedaref, as well as military formations in Kassala and other areas. The source stressed that substantial forces are available for deployment if required, adding that the forces stationed in neighbouring states are many times larger than those currently deployed in Damazin and the wider Blue Nile Region.
The source explained that redeployment is a normal military procedure employed by armies during wartime and does not necessarily indicate a decline in combat capability. The source noted that the Sudanese Armed Forces have conducted similar operations on numerous occasions since the outbreak of the War of Dignity, before subsequently regaining the initiative and making battlefield advances on several fronts.
The source cited previous military developments in El Obeid, in North Kordofan State, where redeployment operations were followed by periods of military advances during which the Sudanese Armed Forces were able to push back the militia and expand the scope of their operations towards the outskirts of Darfur and other areas of Kordofan.
The source stressed that the current movements form part of military planning for the next phase of operations, and that they should be assessed in the context of the overall military campaign and its results, rather than on the basis of isolated troop movements on the ground.

Read further details on the full/ fledged brutal war UAE and Ethiopia are waging against Sudan, in violation of international law.
A militiaman who defected from UAE backed RSF openly states that they received weapons, ammunition, vehicles, and uniforms in Ethiopia, and provides all the details. “The wounded received all their treatment in Asosa,” he said, explaining that fighters withdrawing from Kurmuk went directly into Ethiopia.
The militiaman said the operations were led by an Emirati named “Abu Mohammed,” who also personally paid the soldiers’ salaries. He also said that drone strikes against Sudan were being launched from the Asosa area of Ethiopia.
The UAE's candidate for UN Secretary-General, Lana Nusseibeh, has finished fourth in the UN Security Council’s latest informal straw poll, receiving seven encouraging votes, six discouraging votes, and two abstentions.
Failing to reach the nine votes required to secure a formal nomination, her entry into the race has been highly controversial given that the veteran diplomat, who served as the UAE’s ambassador to the UN from 2013 to 2024, has persistently denied the UAE's support for the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), a militia accused of g*nocide in Sudan.
During her tenure, the UAE's mission also reportedly worked to keep Sudan off the Security Council agenda and exclude Sudanese representatives from meetings.
As a result, there is an ongoing campaign against her candidacy by activists and rights groups, including Human Rights Watch (HRW), who accused her of whitewashing the UAE's abuses, noting that she persistently "dismissed and undermined the findings of the UN’s own reports".
HRW further questioned her "willingness to defend the independence and integrity of the UN and its investigative mechanisms".
Despite Nusseibeh's fourth-place finish behind Costa Rican frontrunner Rebeca Grynspan, campaign organisers behind the global #NoToLana movement - which can be found on notolana.com - emphasise that the fight to block her candidacy is far from complete.
"The campaign against Lana Nusseibeh’s nomination is not over," stated Sudanese government advisor Amgad Faried, noting that indicative straw polls will continue until the Council agrees on a candidate without a veto from one of the five permanent members of the UN Security Council - the US, UK, France, China and Russia.
"[This is] about the independence and credibility of the United Nations," Fareid said, adding that "the highest office in the organisation must not become a reward for political and financial influence, or a means of purchasing immunity from accountability...the seat of UN Secretary-General is not for sale."
Lana Nusseibeh Faces International Backlash Over Sudan Remarks Amid Growing “NoToLana” Campaign and Questions Over Her Role in Defending the UAE
November 4, 2026
Lana Nusseibeh, the United Arab Emirates’ candidate for United Nations Secretary-General, has faced a wave of criticism on X after pledging to protect Sudanese civilians and hold the UAE-backed Rapid Support Militia (Janjaweed) accountable for its atrocities. Journalists, researchers, and human rights advocates questioned whether her calls for accountability would extend to those arming and financing the militia, given her previous role in defending the UAE government and denying allegations of its support for the group.
Nusseibeh shared an excerpt from her response to POLITICO’s NatSec Daily, stating that Sudan would be a priority if she became UN Secretary-General. She called for an end to the fighting, protection for civilians and humanitarian workers, accountability for atrocities committed by the Rapid Support Militia, and a political process guided by the Sudanese people’s democratic aspirations.
Her remarks drew critical responses from several prominent commentators.
Nesrine Malik, a Sudanese-British columnist for The Guardian, argued that Nusseibeh had failed to address allegations that the UAE was arming the militia. Malik described her response as an attempt to sidestep the issue, noting that Nusseibeh refused even to name the UAE or acknowledge it as a potential subject of investigation.
“In that regard Nusseibeh is acting simply as a UAE representative, not a neutral party,” Malik wrote.
Claudio Francavilla, a researcher at Human Rights Watch, posed a direct question: “Should RSF backers be held accountable as well?”
Cameron Hudson, an American researcher specializing in Sudan and African affairs, warned that an even worse outcome than the UN ignoring Sudan would be a Secretary-General issuing performative appeals for justice and accountability while overlooking those enabling the war.
The backlash follows a October 28 statement by Human Rights Watch, which accused Nusseibeh of using her diplomatic positions over the years to deny or downplay abuses linked to UAE policies in Sudan and Yemen.
Bruno Stagno Ugarte, the organization's Chief Advocacy Officer, criticized her record of denying UAE support for the militia and challenging UN findings concerning Abu Dhabi's connections to the group, arguing that such positions undermined efforts to secure justice and accountability for victims.
In a July 2024 interview with CNN, Nusseibeh categorically denied allegations that the UAE was arming the Rapid Support Militia. She also rejected the findings of UN experts who had described allegations of UAE military support as credible.
The Human Rights Watch statement followed an October 27 interactive dialogue with candidates for UN Secretary-General, during which Nusseibeh faced direct questions about her previous rejection of UN findings and her ability to act independently of the UAE government. She did not directly address whether she continued to reject those findings, instead stating that she had taken leave from her ministerial position and that questions concerning the UAE should be directed to its government.
These developments have coincided with the growing “NoToLana” campaign, which seeks to mobilize international opposition to her candidacy by contacting governments and diplomatic missions, citing her record of defending UAE policies, particularly regarding Sudan.
In her first informal Security Council straw poll, held on October 30, Nusseibeh received seven encouraging votes, six discouraging votes, and two expressions of no opinion, placing fourth among the candidates.
She trailed Costa Rica's Rebeca Grynspan, who received 11 encouraging votes, Argentina's Rafael Grossi with nine, and Guyana's Carolyn Rodrigues-Birkett with eight. Although the straw poll was nonbinding, Nusseibeh had not secured the minimum nine votes required for a Security Council recommendation, which must also face no veto from any of the five permanent members.
The controversy unfolds against a growing body of evidence concerning UAE military support for the Rapid Support Militia, documented in multiple UN investigations, human rights reports, and international media investigations.
The UN Independent International Fact-Finding Mission for Sudan examined cross-border networks linked to the UAE and their role in supplying weapons, military equipment, training, logistical support, and mercenaries to the militia.
Sudanese Echo also published details from a leaked final report by the UN Security Council's Panel of Experts on Sudan, documenting networks involved in recruiting, financing, training, and transporting Colombian mercenaries to Sudan, alongside military supply routes.
Additional investigations by Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch, as well as reporting by Reuters, The New York Times, The Washington Post, The Guardian, and other international media organizations, have examined weapons transfers, financing, and logistical networks linked to Abu Dhabi.
The UAE continues to deny providing military support to the militia, while Ethiopia has previously rejected Sudanese allegations that it facilitated the group's operations.
The criticism surrounding Nusseibeh's latest remarks has renewed a central question raised by opponents of her candidacy: Can accountability extend to those supplying the militia with weapons and financing when a candidate seeking to lead the United Nations has spent years denying allegations involving the very government she represented?
