The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ethiopia, in collaboration with the Ethiopian National Defense College, held a briefing session on Ethiopia’s foreign policy for students of the College at the Ministry today.
The session brought together Ethiopian students and their counterparts from Kenya, Rwanda, Tanzania, Morocco, and other countries, with the aim of enhancing their understanding of Ethiopia’s foreign policy priorities, strategic direction, and practical implementation.
In his opening remarks, Ambassador Zerihun Abebe, Director General of African Affairs at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, highlighted the Ministry’s role in advancing Ethiopia’s foreign policy objectives and maintaining diplomatic relations with other countries. He emphasized that peace and security, alongside economic prosperity promoted through regional integration, remain central to Ethiopia’s national interests and diplomatic engagement.
Fitsum Girma, Deputy Director General of African Affairs, subsequently delivered a detailed briefing on the key priorities of Ethiopia’s foreign policy and their implementation within regional, continental, and global levels. He particularly emphasized Ethiopia’s strategies for strengthening diplomatic engagement with neighboring countries, other African states, and intergovernmental organizations.
The session also provided an opportunity for students to raise questions and exchange views on Ethiopia’s foreign policy and diplomatic practice, further enhancing their understanding of the country’s diplomatic approaches to advancing its national interests.

Today, I held a productive discussion with Eric Yuan, the newly appointed Chief Executive Officer of Huawei Ethiopia, on the progress of our digital economy and the opportunities that lie ahead.
Our conversation reflected a shared appreciation of Ethiopia’s progress toward building a more connected, inclusive, and competitive economy. The CEO commended the government’s ongoing efforts and reaffirmed Huawei’s commitment to supporting our national ambitions.
Huawei has been an important partner in this journey, particularly in expanding ICT infrastructure and strengthening connectivity. As we advance toward Digital Ethiopia 2030, our priority is not simply to embrace new technologies, but to ensure that they create lasting value for our people, strengthen national capabilities, and unlock new opportunities for innovation and economic growth.
We also discussed ways to deepen our cooperation, guided by the principles of national ownership, mutual trust, sustainability, security, and local value creation.
Ethiopia’s digital future will depend on strong partnerships, but it must ultimately be shaped by our own priorities and aspirations.
We agreed to further strengthen our collaboration with Huawei, translating our shared commitments into tangible results that benefit our people and contribute to our long-term development.

The 12th Tana High-Level Forum, themed "Pathways to Peace in Africa: Economic Sovereignty and Geopolitical Transformation," successfully concluded today on the shores of Lake Tana in Bahir Dar, Ethiopia.
In his closing remarks, the Tana Forum Board Chairperson and President of the Republic of Ghana, John Dramani Mahama, urged African leaders to move beyond dialogue and take concrete action to address the continent’s challenges and advance sustainable solutions. He noted that sustaining peace requires solidarity, integrity, unity, and the promotion of an inclusive society.
The forum concluded with a high-level panel discussion featuring former presidents and prime ministers. Drawing on insights from previous sessions, the closing panel sought to converge all debates, ideas, approaches, and recommendations to discuss how to chart Africa's geopolitical and economic future and highlight urgent priorities where action is needed most.

Today, we officially inaugurated the Megech Irrigation Dam Project, a major milestone for historic Gondar and its surrounding community. Though delayed for years, we resolved execution challenges through the Medemer philosophy to realize this vital project.
With a capacity of 185 million cubic meters, the dam will irrigate over 17,000 hectares, directly benefiting tens of thousands of local farmers. Beyond supplying reliable, clean drinking water to Gondar and nearby towns, it stimulates a broader economic growth. The artificial lake will foster urban agriculture, large-scale fisheries, and tourism resorts, creating massive job opportunities for local youth.
While this success stems from rigorous monitoring, Gondar still deserves much more development. I urge the public to actively participate in its development. We remain dedicated to ensuring Ethiopia’s progress is inclusive, benefiting all regions and citizens.

I was pleased to participate in the 12th Tana High-Level Forum on Security in Africa, held under the theme “Pathways to Peace in Africa: Economic Sovereignty and Geopolitical Transformation,” where I also delivered remarks.
The theme speaks to a reality we cannot ignore decisions made far beyond our borders can affect our citizens, our economic prospects, and our security. We cannot control every shock, but we can strengthen our resilience. For Africa, this means developing homegrown solutions, strengthening economic sovereignty, and deepening cooperation. Africa must not simply adapt to a changing global order; we must help shape it.
For Ethiopia, lasting peace is personal. It requires protecting civilians, upholding the constitutional order, and keeping the door open to dialogue. Through our commitment to the National Dialogue, we remain ready to welcome all who choose the path of peace.
The philosophy of Medemer reminds us that our strength lies in bringing our capacities together and developing solutions rooted in our own realities. We can build a more resilient, peaceful, and prosperous continent while taking a greater role in shaping the world our future generations will inherit.
