Raeburn’s lost portrait of Robert Burns has been on quite a journey in the last year: first, London auction house with an estimate of £300; then Simon Gillespie’s studio for conservation; and finally the National Gallery of Scotland. 1/2

I was in Edinburgh last night to celebrate with @EdinburghWH the 30th anniversary of the establishment of the Old and New Town World Heritage Sites. While walking up the Royal Mile I was struck by the beautiful view of the crown steeple to St Giles Cathedral all lit up, and forming the backdrop to the monument to Adam Smith. A quintessential Edinburgh view given Smith’s connections to the Royal Mile even though he was born in Kirkcaldy and the Glasgow Force is strong in this one (Smith studied at the University of Glasgow where he later became Professor of Moral Philosophy and he wrote ‘The Theory of Moral Sentiments’ while living in the city). Nevertheless, the light and feel of this ancient urban space is very special so you can see why Edinburgh deservedly secured World Heritage Site status. I wish my east coast colleagues every success in their continuing efforts to look after it.
