🎉 Congratulations to Dr. Richard Cook, who has been named President of @cscs_sccc! Dr. Cook is Head of the Division of Cardiac Surgery at Vancouver General Hospital and Director of Minimal Access and Robotically-Assisted Cardiac Surgery at VGH. He is also a Clinical Professor of Surgery at UBC and a lead at DCI’s Centre for Minimally Invasive Surgery. He previously served as Chair of the Cardiac Surgery Exam Board at the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada. His clinical and research work focuses on alternatives to sternotomy-based surgery. This includes mini-thoracotomy approaches for mitral and tricuspid valve repair and replacement, robotically-assisted coronary artery bypass, and transcatheter interventions for valvular heart disease. As President, he will help guide the national direction of cardiac surgery training, standards and practice. #DCI #CardiacSurgery #VGH #UBC

With profound sadness, we acknowledge the passing of Professor David Taggart of the University of Oxford - an outstanding cardiac surgeon, clinical investigator, educator and one of the true giants of coronary surgery. David was a longstanding friend and generous contributor to EACTS. Our members will remember his formidable intellect, his candour and the energy with which he shared his knowledge. His legacy will endure through the evidence he helped create, the surgical practice he changed, the colleagues he challenged and inspired, and the patients who continue to benefit from his work. We honour his life and his exceptional contribution to our profession. Read more: eacts.org/our-community/news…

Quantitative assessment of #Hypertension & Blood Pressure as a risk for #AorticDissection at Population level J-SHC >500k, 4 y f/up, 84 events - AD mortality UK Biobank >500k, 9 y f/up, 182 events - AD incidence +Meta-analysis of 6 previous studies "The 95% CIs of the relative risks were >1.0 at SBP >132 mm Hg and DBP >75 mm Hg, suggesting a risk of AD even within a high normal BP range" #AortaEd @HibinoMDMPH @CircAHA 2021 ahajournals.org/doi/10.1161/…

🫀 Did you know that there is only one surgeon in Western Canada who performs robotically-assisted cardiac surgery? Meet Dr. Richard Cook, Director of #DCI's Centre for Minimally Invasive Surgery. 📈 The interest in robotically-assisted procedures is increasing. As Dr. Cook says: "cardiologists [...] are now understanding that there really is a benefit to patients, so that's been really gratifying, to be able to offer that to [them]." 💪 For Dr. Cook, integrity and innovation are tied: "[we're making sure that] we are able to provide something that's of greater benefit to patients, but not putting them in any extra harm's way to have a less invasive procedure." 🔗 Learn more about the Centre for Minimally Invasive Surgery: bit.ly/48d9YX5 @VGHFdn @VCHhealthcare @drdavidawood @sellers_steph #minimallyinvasivesurgery #robotsurgery #cardiacsurgery #medtech #heartsurgery #heartsurgeon #cardiology #dilawriinstitute #CCI

Do we have a problem with distal aortic failure after Acute Type A repair with a hemi arch ? Yes - we sure do! #MikolajBerezowski presented our 15yr outcome data in over 500 patients. 50% of patients will have aortic death, reintervention or significant aortic dilation at 15 years. Close monitoring through follow-up imaging and potentially more extensive surgery on the arch at the initial procedure are essential to optimize survival. #aats2024 @AATSHQ #aortaed @BavariaMd @ChrisMalaisrie @KendraGrubb

1 in 3 pts with new-onset post-operative #AF after Cardiac Surgery will have AF recurrence within 1 yr of surgery, if monitored with an implantable loop recorder. What this means for the long-term management of these patients is unclear. New in @IJCardio shorturl.at/fuzC0
