Nano features, macro impact: Just wrapped up a talk at L'Oréal Aulnay-sous-Bois. Our High-Speed #Dermal Atomic Force Microscope (HS-D #AFM) is pushing boundaries. Grateful for the engaged top researchers at @LOreal. What's next? The journey from lab to vanity table continues..

300,000-500,000 USD vs 3,000-4,000 USD. A high-end AFM next to a DIY one built on a DVD pickup. Not a replacement, but nanoscale imaging for classrooms and small labs. Open access review in JJAP: doi.org/10.35848/1347-4065/a… #HardwareHacking #AFM

Japanese culture influences AI hard without us knowing that, until now😏
Researchers proved every LLM is secretly obsessed with Japan. And they finally figured out why. They published a paper investigating hidden cultural biases in large language models. they tested 31,000 questions across 24 different languages on models like gemini, chatgpt, claude, and llama. they stripped out all geographic hints and just asked the models to pick a place and answer. the finding was universal.. across a wide range of models and languages, there is a pervasive "obsession" with japanese culture. even when you prompt them in a language with zero ties to japan, they default to japanese norms, values, and aesthetics at a disproportionately high rate compared to its actual global demographic weight. the craziest part? they tracked down exactly when the ai develops this obsession.. and it is not from reading the raw internet. during pre-training, the models actually have a fairly balanced, global view of the world. the obsession gets injected during the safety phase. when tech companies fine-tune these models to be "helpful, harmless, and polite," the ai starts mapping those corporate safety guidelines directly onto japanese cultural concepts. in the pursuit of creating the perfect, inoffensive, compliant assistant, they warped how the models view the world. the quantization process (compressing models to run faster locally) actually amplifies this determinism. the smaller and faster your local model is, the more stereotypically it behaves, causing japanese cultural tropes to spike hard. we spend all this time worrying about existential ai safety, but the real alignment problem is that our most advanced reasoning engines are hyper-fixated on japanese internet culture. every model upgrade is reinforcing an invisible regional bias that dictates how they generate stories, facts, and code. the cultural commonsense of the internet is not universal.. it’s just localized to whatever the heaviest reddit and anime wiki users were obsessed with.

This is eczema at the nanoscale. Skin cells from a tape strip, imaged by AFM: healthy (top left) vs severe atopic dermatitis (bottom right). More nano-bumps, higher score: 0.343 vs 1.560. In Allergy: doi.org/10.1111/all.70170 #SkinNanotexture #AFM

Great day at the 21st BRCB Workshop, Malmö University 😊 New collaboration opportunity: 1000+ skin tapes to correlate disease annotation with skin nanotexture. Thanks for the nice suggestions! Hope to solve how circular nano objects form. Thanks @LEOFondet #SkinNanotexture #AFM

Yes, that microscope is made of circuit boards. Our DIY atomic force microscope uses PCBs as the frame, piezo buzzers as the scanner and a DVD pickup to read the probe. In Measurement Science and Technology: doi.org/10.1088/1361-6501/ae… #HardwareHacking #AFM #DIY

Your skin has a nanotexture. It changes with atopic dermatitis, with age, with UV, and maybe with stress. Reading it used to need a €500k microscope. We built one from a scrapped PlayStation 4. @hackaday on my Hackaday Europe 2026 talk: hackaday.com/2026/09/01/hack…
