African elephants have drastically declined in the last 50 years. Study: forest elephant numbers decreased by 90% while savanna populations fell by an average of 70%. Perhaps most shocking of all, the combined elephant population plunged by 77% on average. earth.com/news/african-eleph…

For 25 years, a birth control campaign has been successfully curbing the growth of some elephant herds in South Africa - at little to no cost to the government. But North West province has failed to dose a single elephant. #CarteBlanche @ermbates #wildlife

🐘 💔 𝗪𝗛𝗘𝗡 𝗗𝗜𝗗 𝗪𝗘 𝗟𝗢𝗦𝗘 𝗢𝗨𝗥 𝗛𝗨𝗠𝗔𝗡𝗜𝗧𝗬? How can we look into the eyes of a suffering elephant, witness her anguish, and STILL walk away? How can we watch elephant children struggling against their shackles, magnificent beings broken into submission, and somehow convince ourselves that this is acceptable? 𝗪𝗛𝗔𝗧 𝗛𝗔𝗦 𝗛𝗔𝗣𝗣𝗘𝗡𝗘𝗗 𝗧𝗢 𝗢𝗨𝗥 𝗖𝗢𝗟𝗟𝗘𝗖𝗧𝗜𝗩𝗘 𝗖𝗢𝗡𝗦𝗖𝗜𝗘𝗡𝗖𝗘? In parts of India, elephants continue to pay a heartbreaking price for human greed, indifference and exploitation justified in the name of tradition. South Africa: A new survey found 60 % of international respondents would consider choosing a different destination if mass or selective elephant culling were reintroduced. 🇿🇦 tourism GDP hits 9%, or 1.5 - 1.8 mio direct & indirect jobs. ofm.co.za/article/sa/342990/…
Culling was banned after a global outcry, but elephant populations are growing. Will we cross a line drawn 30 years ago? That’s #CarteBlanche this Sunday at 7pm on @MNet channel 101, and @DStv Stream.

Horrific captivity of #Miyako in a shitty private zoo of #Japan.. One single room this poor animal has lived for 53 years. Human prisoners and slaves have better lives than these elephants stuck in the shitty zoos of Japan. India has been sending elephants to Japan also.
🐘 Is 53 years of isolation cause for celebration? For Miyako's 53rd birthday, Utsunomiya Zoo has announced two events: 📅 24 October: A lecture by Sayuri Sakamoto, owner of Ichihara Elephant Kingdom. 📅 25 October: Miyako's birthday celebration. Born in Thailand in 1973, Miyako was brought to Utsunomiya Zoo as a baby that same year, where she has lived alone ever since. 53 long, lonely years. While the zoo prepares to celebrate her birthday, the fundamental question remains: When will Miyako's need for elephant companionship and appropriate living conditions finally be addressed? @animalsPEACEnet 🔗 kyodonewsprwire.jp/release/2… #IchiharaElephantKingdom #UtsunomiyaZoo #solitaryelephantsinjapan

😭🐘 𝗔 𝗥𝗔𝗚𝗜𝗡𝗚 𝗥𝗜𝗩𝗘𝗥 𝗦𝗪𝗘𝗣𝗧 𝗔 𝗡𝗘𝗪𝗕𝗢𝗥𝗡 𝗙𝗥𝗢𝗠 𝗛𝗜𝗦 𝗠𝗢𝗧𝗛𝗘𝗥. 𝗙𝗜𝗩𝗘 𝗙𝗜𝗦𝗛𝗘𝗥𝗠𝗘𝗡 𝗥𝗘𝗙𝗨𝗦𝗘𝗗 𝗧𝗢 𝗟𝗘𝗧 𝗧𝗛𝗔𝗧 𝗕𝗘 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗘𝗡𝗗 𝗢𝗙 𝗧𝗛𝗘𝗜𝗥 𝗦𝗧𝗢𝗥𝗬. Only three or four days old, the tiny elephant calf was swept nearly four kilometres downstream by the raging waters of the Teesta River in West Bengal. His mother could not reach him. But five fishermen could—and they did. In this raw footage, we see 𝗠𝗶𝘁𝗵𝘂 𝗗𝗮𝘀, 𝗥𝗮𝗷𝗲𝘀𝗵 𝗗𝗮𝘀, 𝗕𝗶𝘀𝘄𝗮𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗵 𝗗𝗮𝘀, 𝗚𝗼𝗽𝗮𝗹 𝗗𝗮𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗕𝗮𝗯𝗹𝘂 𝗗𝗮𝘀 paddling their small wooden boat towards the drowning calf, pulling his heavy, exhausted body from the turbulent water and somehow lifting him aboard. A newborn Asian elephant can weigh around 𝟳𝟬–𝟭𝟱𝟬 𝗸𝗶𝗹𝗼𝗴𝗿𝗮𝗺𝘀—yet these men refused to leave him behind. They brought him safely ashore, where his desperate cries carried across the landscape—the voice of a frightened baby calling for the one being he needed most. And then… 𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗺𝗼𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿 𝗰𝗮𝗺𝗲. The little calf was finally reunited with her. A life saved. A mother’s anguish ended. A family made whole again. 💞 We know this beautiful story has already been shared many times. But some stories deserve to be told 𝗮 𝗵𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗿𝗲𝗱—𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗻 𝗮 𝘁𝗵𝗼𝘂𝘀𝗮𝗻𝗱—𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗲𝘀. No matter how often we watch this footage, it brings tears of joy to our eyes. And more importantly, the true heroes deserve to be seen, named and honored. Too often, courageous local people become the 𝘂𝗻𝘀𝘂𝗻𝗴 𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗼𝗲𝘀 of wildlife rescues, while others receive the recognition. Today, we celebrate the fishermen whose compassion was immediate, whose courage was immeasurable, and whose actions gave this baby back to his mother. 𝗠𝗶𝘁𝗵𝘂, 𝗥𝗮𝗷𝗲𝘀𝗵, 𝗕𝗶𝘀𝘄𝗮𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗵, 𝗚𝗼𝗽𝗮𝗹, 𝗕𝗮𝗯𝗹𝘂. We see you. We honor you. And we will not allow your extraordinary act of humanity to be forgotten. 🙏🐘💚 In a world where darkness so often dominates the headlines, acts of courage and compassion like this remind us that goodness is still alive—and restore our faith in the extraordinary humanity of ordinary people. Please 𝗪𝗔𝗧𝗖𝗛 𝗔𝗡𝗗 𝗦𝗛𝗔𝗥𝗘—not only for the miracle of this reunion, but so the five men who made it possible receive the gratitude and recognition they so deeply deserve. #HumanityRestored #ElephantRescue #AsianElephants #WildlifeRescue #CompassionInAction 🐘💚
