It has been two years since Artie arrived! Caregivers celebrated his 42nd birthday and arrival date with a giant bamboo letter “A” and two donated Christmas trees decorated with hay tinsel and orange slice ornaments. Artie also received one of his preferred snacks, watermelon!
We celebrated Sissy’s 57th birthday on January 26th! This birthday marked 25 years of Sissy living at The Elephant Sanctuary in Tennessee — happy birthday to our longest-time resident! youtu.be/NqjNI9vBFiA
While of course The Elephant Sanctuary is a haven for elephants, we welcome other species in our 3,060 acres too, like this owl Africa Barn Care Staff photographed near the barn. In addition to owls and elephants, The Sanctuary is home to turkey, deer, turtles, coyotes, and more!
The snow has melted, but not before we caught a short video of Edie scooping it up to eat by the trunkful! Nosey also snacked on a bale of hay outside while Edie tasted the snow and ate donated Christmas trees.
It’s a snow day in Hohenwald! Sukari headed outside for a winter snack — the only elephant at Africa to venture into the snow! As always, the elephants at The Sanctuary have access to heated barns and are staying warm and getting attention in their care.
Still have your Christmas tree? Upcycle it for a BIG cause by donating it to The Sanctuary! Your tree, along with other branches and trimmings, can provide essential browse and enrichment for our elephant residents, supporting their health and well-being during the cooler months.
We are also seeking other various types of browse and welcome donations year-round. For more information including types of browse needed and where to donate, visit elephants.com/browse.
If you're not local to Tennessee, you can still contribute to feeding the elephants by donating to our Feed an Elephant program! This helps offset the recurring expense of hay, fresh produce, and other supplements. Give now: bit.ly/424VDdB. Thank you for your generosity!
Osh met the female residents of Asia Habitat at a shared barrier! Nosey and Osh sparred, a behavior often seen in social bonding among African elephants. The pair displayed affiliative and playful behaviors, showcasing a positive and dynamic connection! youtu.be/ZKkhGLBy8cM
We are overwhelmed with the generous support of our donors who raised $1,692,315 during the 2024 Year End Campaign! THANK YOU for making home and herd possible and ensuring an incredible start to 2025. Together, we are creating a better world for all elephants!
As we reflect on 2024's growth and achievements, we are overwhelmed with gratitude for your incredible support. We look forward to continuing our vital mission as we prepare for another year—and a new chapter in The Sanctuary’s history. Happy New Year!
We were honored to be featured on the @TODAYshow! This segment that aired on Friday was filmed in September and beautifully captures the Donna we knew and loved. Thank you, Today, for providing a glimpse into Sanctuary life and sharing our mission! today.com/video/an-inside-lo…
With great sadness, The Elephant Sanctuary in Tennessee announces the sudden passing of African elephant Donna at the age of 44. On the morning of December 24, Donna entered her barn and began eating as usual. A short time later, Staff noticed a subtle change in her demeanor.
“Donna was deeply loved by her Care Staff and by everyone who had the privilege of knowing her. Her sudden passing has left us heartbroken. We remain committed to understanding the cause of her passing and to honoring Donna’s memory.” - Janice Zeitlin, CEO
